The first Blades match my Grandad went to was United's 11-2 win against Cardiff in 1925. This is the most goals we have ever scored in a league game. His last game was the 1-0 defeat to Walsall, which saw us relegated to the fourth tier for the only time in our history (so far!). Typical United fan he started on a record high and finished on a record low.

An old friend (born 1909, died 1989) went to the 11-2 win on New Years Day 1926 and said when the 10th goal went in most of the spectators threw their hats/caps into the air but after that it was a struggle for them to find their hats/caps from the terracing steps

Didn't we beat them in the FA Cup Final in 1925?

And then the following year - the year I've just learned began with us beating them 11-2 - didn't they have their turn and take it out of England for the only time?

I wonder how many saw the thread title and imagined that someone had taken their Grandad to Rochdale. For the first time in his long life, the old feller had finally agreed to go and watch the Blades.

Unfortunately Granpops got caught in the middle of a tug of war for a pitch cover, or lost his glasses in the smoke, or got splattered with beer or something. Now the poor bloke is vowing never to go and watch Sheffield United again.
