With the 2 Blackpool lads due to go back after a sucessful loan spell. Who do you rate as the best loans we have had? Halford?

What about bad ones? Nos and Bent apart?

The best one - Glyn Hodges

There are shedloads of bad ones. Andy Morrison, Richard Edghill, David Lee, David Johnson, Nos, Bent, Mattock, Lowry, and that is just for starters

Michael Twiss was another, Steve Bruce's first signing and i'm sure he won't have made one as bad during his career.

Lee Martin came, was full of himself, was shit and wore blue boots for a Sheffield Derby

I didn't mind Lowry, thought he was solid enough.

Thought Lee Martin was a good player too. A good crosser of the ball which we haven't had many of recently.

As for bad loans, Jon Newby and James Thomas anyone?

Good

Paddy Kenny
Jon Harley
Dean Windass
Danny Webber
Phil Bardsley
Gary Cahill
Andy Reid

Bad:

Anthony Stokes
Steve Jagielka
Elian Parrino
Hao Haidong (was he on loan?)
John Curtis
Jonjo O'Toole
Marcel Seip
Paul Connolly
Jon Fortune

God, we've had some shockers haven't we!?!?

From the title of the thread I thought it would be what makes a good loan and what makes a bad one. I am going to attempt to take the debate to another place (hope you don't mind Stanny). There's been a lot of talk abotu reliance on loan players and whether we should have any in the squad etc. We have suffered in the past few years by being over reliant on loans and it has cost us big time. However the use of Clarke and Philips shows that loans can have a positve impact. My personal opinion is that loans can add value, but you should not rely on them. By this I mean if you have the core of the squad, the back bone of the team, a solid team etc that is made up of permanent players, then using loans can add value. They should really be additions to the squad and not filling key positions. The problem in the last few years is that we filled key positions with loan players. Several key positions and not just one or two. When the chips were down, where these temps ever really going to give 110%, bust a gut for their team mates or put their body on the line? Of course not. We've seen that Philips and Clarke can add value and I hope Wilson continues to use loans to add value to the squad/team. Presumably there is money for wages, so hopefully he can bring in more.

John Harley

Not a coincidence that our unbeaten streak in that season was at the same time as his three months with us...

Dean Sturridge had a rubbish loan spell with us I recall.

Shame as I always thought he was a good player.

The same applies to David Johnson, who used to frighten the life out of me in his Ipswich days but was poor for us.

2 good ones from days of yore - Bruce Rioch and Dean Glover.

What side of the fence would Andrew Davies be on?

He got a fair bit of stick but I thought he was ok.

I seem to remember Brett Angell getting a couple of goals during a short stint at the lane.

Would we class him as a good one?

Over the years I've seen several who looked like world-beaters in their loan spell, then as soon as we give the full contract they overnight turned into a bag of shite.

You've all missed the best I've seen....Gary Cahill

Can we class Gary Speed as a loan? He was "On Loan" so he couldn't play vs. Bolton then we signed him before his first game.

Mark Bunn did well.

Also, Steve Simonsen did well as a loan. Polar opposite as a Sheff Utd player

Creswell was good on loan too. Then has been hit and miss ever since.

Mark Bunn did well.

That was until he developed that degenerative condition whereby his arms got proportionally shorter the further out the shot he was supposed to save came from. Don't think I've ever seen a United keeper beaten from range so frequently.

What about Kyle Walker? Pretty good on loan for us but even better in the Premiership.

You're fine Ollie. What you say is spot on given that the right loan at the right time can help. Look at Halford when we had him he played as though he was a Blade and had we gone up he probably would have been again. Phillips and Clarke show the same commitment whereas Notshirtworthy and Bent did not
