Most people have blamed McMahon for County's goal yesterday. His sliced clearence lead to the corner from which Notts County scored. But on average only 1 in 50 corners results in a goal, and the opposition is always likely to get some during a game.

We know how the corner happened, but what happened next? I'll let the photos speak for themselves this time:

What goes wrong?

After being solid most of the game at the back, we gave away an easy corner, skewed a resultant ball and then...

That's my take - indecisiveness from the goalie who should have taken charge of his 6-yard box.

bit harsh on the keeper i reckon.. in the pic there are five blades and two county waiting for the rebound

I can't see from Bergen's pictures where the initial corner landed. If it's in the bunch of three on the corner of the six yard box then it's for the defence to deal with: the goalkeeper should be responsible for an area bounded by the six yard line and his posts.

I think Bergen is talking about the fact that we have three defenders and a goalkeeper all trying to hide behind a post. Who's picking up the men? It looks like we operate a man-marking system and Maguire should have been picking up Hughes, who got the run on him between (1) and (2). Is it Kitson who leaves the no6 to attack a ball he was never going to win?

We should have been 3 or 4-0 at that point though...

Whilst that bald statement is inded true, it has always seemed to me (and I have no numerical evidence to back this up at all) that a disproportionate number of goals result from set-pieces that are needlessly given away. The lazy pass back, the sliced clearance etc. seem to be punished wheras the magnificent save, last ditch clearance are seemingly defended far better. Perhaps it's all psychological.
We actually said as much as the corner was going to be taken (but then again perhaps we always say it on such occasions).

As for the pictures, that second would make a great "spot the ball" picture.

Looks more like Collins who loses him to me

Dead right. Picture 3 is a bit of an embarrassment tbh; pub team antics. It shows a lack of organisation and structure.

As good as Maguire, Collins et al are individually, we seem to be missing something "collectivley" in the defence department.
I thought it last year as well; but we seem to be susceptible to crosses and corners especially balls inbetween or behind the 2 centre halves. Maybe the "quiet" Simmo was partially responsible for these issues and we can hope that things improve under Howard, who seems to have got a good set of lungs on him!
UTB.

Maguire is the zone man without a man to mark. Notice Hill marking Hughes (no 11) in the second photo. He sees Howard on his way off the line and thinks he has to go to the line in case a header is lobbed over him. In doing so he leaves Hughes who is the man who eventually is free to shoot.

It's an example of ball watching, and Hill should have stuck to his man. Flynn is on the back post and should have been responsible for off the line clearences.

Decent point, worth taking into consideration. You could say that if a corner happens as a result of a excellently timed tackle in the box, the entire team will be on their toes and fully concentrated, determined to avoid danger at the corner kick as well.

When a set piece is given away by a personal mistake like that, it's not unthinkable that the team will be a bit irritated, frustrated and lose a little focus and organisation.

Having said that it's also reasonable to think that fans will remember such a mistake particularly well when it gets punished straight away.
