A brief report:

Gillingham is a proper dump. BladeInThatcham, moDtheGod and I met in Victoria and headed down with plans to find a nice pub to hole up in before heading on to the ground. That proved elusive as the first place we went to (the Will Adams) was basically a converted house - albeit with a decent selection of ales - and the second (the Livingston Arms) was a disaster with the beer selection limited to Stella. That meant that Thatcham's suggestion of Jaegerbombs wasn't given the short shrift it should have been.

We then found the away end by chance up a darkened residential street and despite my worries that the stand might collapse, we took our seats along with 348 other hardy souls. It was good to finally put a face to a name (DazBlade88) and see Foxy before he got his phone out.

There really isn't that much to say about the game. Playing an unfamiliar 5-3-2 formation we took our only real chance in the first half with a nice finish from Coady after Porter had hit the underside of the crossbar, before closing out the game professionally. The referee was weak but we figured that our way before Gillingham did and were able to use that to our advantage.

Marks

Howard: 8 only one save to make with a weak shot from Linganzi straight at him. However, there was a moment in the second half where Gillingham lofted in a free kick that Howard claimed at the edge of his area. That alone was a huge improvement on Long, who would have left it to his defence.

Flynn: 7 - a more defensive role which saw him play most of the second half as an auxiliary right back. Looked solid against a limited opponent.

Maguire: 7 - solid, unflustered but booked early on for taking out McDonald. His reading of the game is improving meaning he's getting better at deciding when to go for the ball and when to stand off. He's a class act.

Collins: 7 - see Maguire but without the yellow card.

Hill: 7 - not sure why he was left against Akinfenwa on Gillingham's goal kicks but he didn't ever really look in trouble. That said, he could have left the burly Gills forward to win the first ball and pick up the scraps.

Harris: 6 - got into some decent positions only to waste them with poor crosses.

McGinn: 6 - quiet game for McGinn.

Doyle: 6 - solid game for the returning hero.

Coady: 8 - right place at the right time to score and generally used the ball well.

Porter: 7 - there's no understanding between him and Paynter at all but he put himself about and was unlucky to not score from Harris' cross before Coady got the winner.

Paynter: 5 - for whatever reason, it didn't work for Paynter last night. I'm not convinced he's a better option than Porter and the pair of them are arguably too similar to play together.

Subs:
Davies (for Flynn): think he touched the ball three times. Not sure what position he was supposed to be playing as he replaced Flynn, who was playing right back, but played more centrally.

Murphy (for Paynter): looked to run at Gillingham's defence whenever he could only to be let down by the poor pitch or a poor touch. His pace caused them problems, however.

Baxter (for Porter): think he touched the ball once and that was to give it away in the middle of our half.

Oi - Medway is my neck of the woods, though you were at the less salubrious end. In defence of Gillingham though, I can't see why people call it a dump, a football stadium surrounded by nondescript terraced houses is very much like the area round the Lane.

You should have come drinking near me in Rochester as Foxy did on my advice - much nicer and a 5 min train journey to Gillingham.

We had a good laugh at Akinfenwa. He makes Shipperly look anorexic and I don't think he ever broke into a jog...

looks better , win 2 more games in hand go joint 11th , top half

BTL - you do make me laugh
To go 11th we will need to get a GD swing of 14 goals in those two games to overtake Bratfud.
Keep up with the optimism feller - it's infectious:cool:

That is true but I was talking about the town centre though - that is desperate.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing :)

He's bloody enormous. I know that he's done interviews and answered questions about his weight but he weighs as much as me and I'm nothing like a professional footballer. That said, I can see why he's effective against weaker defenders than Maguire.

From listening to the match sounded like we always had a game plan, get a goal as quickly as possible then kill the game off, hitting them on the break for the second. Well done Cloughie keep up the good work, just need to beat a few of the big boys now!

repeat the run of 2 years ago and well make it , or not be far off , thats us that is,
14 wins 2 draws 4 losses in 20 games 44 points that relates to

Medway is effectively 4 towns - Strood, Rochester, Chatham and Gillingham - merged into one. Rochester is nice (castle, cathedral, preserved high street etc). The rest less so.

What's Rainham like these days? My neck of the woods till I was 17. Went to Chatham Grammar in another life :)

Was good to meet you boys too, always nice to put a face to a name as you say.

Can't really argue with anything in there, we spoke at half time about letting Akinfenwa win it instead of turning into a battle we were never going to win against him. I enjoyed it last night though, it was a good trip. The game was far from a classic but it didn't need to be, we got the job done in impressive fashion.

I have been a zombie at work this morning though!

I know what you mean, we forgot where we had parked and didn't get home until 10.25!

I pulled a bird from Strood once. Got her number, went to see her the next weekend, watched Road House starring Patrick Swayze, had a shag, and came home.

I'm surprised you got home that late considering how close it was!

The report on the OS doesn't think Baxter even came on last night, I find that slightly harsh on him :D

Some blades told us about Rochester in the ground, something about a decent little Wetherspoons over there?

Don't think it's a terrible ground in a terrible area, if anything I think over the years from what it was the ground has improved a good bit and is much better than what I remember it being.

Anyone else find the way that the Gillingham fans called for just about everything quite cringeworthy?

Handball!

The all yellow kit is so superior to those wanky green shorts and socks. It must be responsible for at least 10% of the improvement away from home.

We looked comfortable on those highlights, albeit brief ones.

Yeah, was indeed a good call.

Nice enough area and we went in The Golden Lion (Wethers), Ale's on and fairly cheap, food was ridiculously quick and it even had cleaner tables than a Wetherspoons would normally :)

Wish I would have nipped over there now, the pubs in town were poor the say the least.

The LBs once wandered into the pub by the station (just found it on Google Street View, The Southern Belle, knew it had a train on the sign!) and though it was full of dodgy characters it was a good laugh and they were singing self-depreciating pikey songs.

I was sat in the medway stand with my dad (got free tickets from a colleague of his) and the Gillingham fans claimed everything and laid into the ref everytime a united player went down. It was getting hilarious when doyle went down under a challenge where you could hear the sound of boot on shinpad from where I was, and the fans around me decided that giving a free kick meant the fix was in.

Other highlights included hearing morgs comment on a pass "Oh I thought that would be shit but it weren't bad were it". Always a great reader of the game :)
