Helps posting this after a great penalty save, but I think he's justified his selection:

- one other good save at least today
- defence seem to be getting along with him - at Gillingham he spread nerves throughout the defence, the team, and the whole of South East England, not happening no more
- several good saves in recent games too

Hard to tell if he was at fault for the chances that hit the bar.

Long played well today. I think he's part of our problem, but credit where it's due.

Decent saves made today and can't knock him for that.

I still wish he would catch the ball more often though.

Solid performance from George today, he looked more confident as well.

Missed chances cost us today.

Sorry, George Long is not a good keeper.
He barely seems to have learnt or improved from his youth team games much despite the number of matches he has played.
Once again today easy shots are parried out in front of him, into the danger area instead of away to the sides. Many of his 'saves' against Walsall fell into this category. Most worrying is his inability to rapidly re-adjust his angles when a player cuts inside.

Some of this is just the basics, I am sure Adkins will know this and hopefully when the cull of the over bloated Clough squad is sorted we can eventually replace him.

Great penalty save ,good save in the first half but still parried it to their forward who missed a sitter. Still weak on presence but a much better game today.

I think he's in good form and that penalty save will do him the world of good, it's just a shame we let the lead slip because that would have been the match winning moment if so.

I've no problem with him punching the ball. His prime concern is getting the ball away from the goal area and if he feels that at the moment he prefers to punch then catch then fair enough. I'd much rather him punch it clear then come for a catch and drop it in the six yard box. He is still a very good prospect IMO, I don't think he should be first choice at the moment, but he's a better option than Howard.

His distribution is a lot better than Howard's, I can't remember it exactly but there was a moment in the game against Shrewsbury where he'd caught the ball and spotted a man up front in space and delivered a pin point pass to him to set us off on what could have been a dangerous attack, I've never seen Howard do anything like that.

Been named in the Football League team of the week today
If you're responsible for choosing the keeper of the week, you're always going to go for the one that saved a good penalty rather than bother watching 12 full matches observing all 24 keeper's contributions.

I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it though.

He is showing signs of improvement. He has a lot to work on still but has some natural ability. Could still make it at a decent level but in some respects is still a short term problem. Howard out in the summer and a new number 1 with George as the competition/cover.

It's not just League 1, it's the Whole Football League

I think there were always questions about his confidence and after the Gillingham game his confidence must have been rock bottom. With hindsight it's regrettable that he played in that game and I think Banks, Shilton and any other world class keeper would have struggled behind the defence that day. It's good to see his improved performances since coming back but he still has some way to go.

We should make a proper judgement when we have 2 decent centre halves.
You might be correct, but then would you want to play with Collins each week?

Don't want to bring him down ,but he wasn't even the best keeper at Oakwell on Saturday :)

No but do ensure you mention it Sitwell.

I expect secretly that you are rather proud that one of our players has had independent recognition and were just about to type a post congratulating the lad...........;)

No, agreed. I'm not sure it will effect his command if the area, but I'd agree we should prioritise the CH position.

Long was as responsible as anyone that day - apart from maybe McFadzean. He was a bundle of nerves.

There was a guy on here who had a bet that Long would be number 1 this year. Confidence is a big thing in any young player. The other thing is that Long plays on a smaller pitch to everyone else in his head (hopefully that will make sense to someone who has played in net), and that's why it gets hoofed more often that not. It will come as watching him previously at training and pre match/half time he has good technique with his feet.

He has gone three games (giving him the benefit of the doubt for Shrewsburys second) without costing us a goal, now if he can go another three, or four in a row without costing us one then he may May have turned some sort of corner.

He made two or three fine saves on Saturday and a class penalty save, but there was still one horrible flap which should have cost us.

I still think he is far from what we require if we are going to start to build a side for next season.
