Tuesday will be our 65th meeting with Fulham in all competitions.

Sheffield United have won 30 and lost 19, drawing 15.

Our first meeting - 19 Apr 1935 Lost 7-2 in League Division Two.

We have met in the league cup three times, in 1961 drawing 1-1 at Craven Cottage on 13th Sept before winning the replay 4-0 at Bramall Lane on 25th Sept. The next time we drew each other was 1971. The Blades winning 3-0 on 7th Sept at Bramall Lane.

Our most successful spell against Fulham came between 1964 and 1976, losing only once in 16 games (Division 1 (9), Division 2 (3), FA Cup (3), League Cup (1)), knocking them out of cups 3 times over this period.

Our last meeting against Fulham was at Craven Cottage and was an unforgettable night. The FA Cup 4th Round Replay on 4th February 2014. After drawing 1-1 at Bramall Lane the week before the game entered the 120th minute, goalless and heading for a dreaded penalty shootout, up popped Shaun Miller...

(Not sure about the dodgy cameraman :))

Small Print.... Fulham have never knocked Sheffield United out of a cup competition.

Which was the year we drew 2-2 at the Lane and Moore and Best played ?

I think I remember Woody scoring that day too.

UTB.

We drew one all in 76-77 when Best and Moore were at Fulham, can't remember if they played though. In the old second division.

That was the score on my first visit to BDTBL in 1961. Johnny Haynes the England captain played for them.

Haynes! A childhood hero of mine. Jimmy Greaves considered Haynes as the best midfielder he played with, and why he never transferred to Spurs I'll never know.
If I remember correctly Tommy Trinder was chairman of Fulham at the time and Haynes was 'looked after' very well.

He was BB. Trinder was the Fulham chairman I believe, but it was Jimmy Hill (then a teammate of Haynes I believe)), then the head of the player's union (I think) who caused what was the beginning of the player revolution in wages, and Hill was responsible for Haynes becoming the first player to get £100 per week, which in those days was a fortune. Once that happened it took players into a new age and we all know where that took the game.

I think even before that the club were very inventive in the ways they got round the maximum wage. As were many clubs and the maximum wage was becoming a travesty. It was plain wrong but it ended the days whereby a good coach and some good local players could win the league irrespective of how well a club was supported and was the start of the 'super-clubs' domination of the top league.

1-1, Woody for us and John Mitchell for Fulham

See below for Woody's goal (27.20) after selling Bobby Moore the dummy and Jimmy Johnstone running to hug Woody after the ball hit the net

Didn't they put us down in 1968? If I remember it right they were already down and we were winning 2-0 and ended up losing 2-3. Not good memories.

Think Allan Clarke scored twice. My dad remembers Wendy fans at the match cheering for Fulham. After the match we had 3 games left (home to West Ham, away to Burnley and at home to Chelsea) but we got only 2 points (2-0 at Burnley)

We lead in all three of those last home games, and as you say, we lost the lot !

They really do test your loyalty at times ............

I didn't know John Mitchell scored against us.

Several years after he retired, I went on a football tour to Portugal with him (he was a big mate of the guy who organised this for our side).

He played in the same side as Bobby Moore, Rodney Marsh and George Best.He also scored the winning goal that got Fulham to the FA cup final.

Boy did he have some good stories.

A terrific guy as well, great company.

My first ever game! Aged 8. The only things I remember are George Best throwing a ball at the linesman and getting booked, and my dad saying how Best was too good for everyone else on the pitch and his teammates had no idea what he was going to do next.

Didn't realise Woody had scored on my debut!

Mitchell's goal against us was good and Blades fans applauded his goal. Will try and find it on you tube

Many years ago we turned up at Craven Cottage ten minutes before scheduled kick-off to find nobody there, the match had been called off for waterlogged pitch very late in the day. We walked on the pitch and didn't even get our shoes dirty, the pitch was fine.

Later that season we called off a home game against them on the day and unless my memory is playing tricks didn't we even do it again Silent??

What decade was this?

60's maybe into the 70's. Don't waste loads of time on it, thanks anyway Silent.
Looks like it was in the 1960s because our matches at Craven Cottage in the 1970s (1976-77 on you tube - lost 3-2, 1977-78 played on Easter (Franks scored own goal in 2-0 defeat) and 1978-79 was on Sat Sept 9th (Woody's last game- lost 2-0))

Silent Blade, you should go on Mastermind, with The History of Sheffield United as your specialist subject.

Which reminds me, I watched Mastermind once when Magnus Magnusson was the host and he asked Which football team plays at Bramall Lane. One of the very few general knowledge questions I actually got right!

That tale reminds me of a team quiz that I took part in many years ago and one of my team mates was asked " What current second division team play at Portman Road?". My mate, who knew very little about football, answered as quick as a flash "all of them eventually". A correct answer but he wasn't given the point.

True story

United began travelling again on train services to London for London away games at the start of the 2006/07. We had an away game at Tottenham in the league early on in the Premiership season and the usual coach we used broke down, and Warnock had the idea of instead of taking the coach down, to take the train down on the Friday afternoon, and that is how it all started.

On one of the following occasions United travelled down on the train on the way down, i worked on board, and made sure i let all the players know where i was off to the next day, we was at West Ham, and i managed to have a good chat with a few of the players, and get a couple of bits autographed. The company had the photographers out that day, and they took a photograph with the on-train crew with the United squad i got my photo taken with it. When the train pulled in to Derby, it was met by a Driver Manager who drove the train down giving Neil Warnock a cab ride, and there was a few press articles where Warnock talked about it, and span the line that he was a boyhood trainspotter. Fair play to Warnock as 2 or 3 years later when he was Palace manager he got in touch with the company and arranged for the Driver Manager who gave him a cab ride, to attend a Palace v Derby match as Warnocks personal guest.

I've not worked on board for a few years, but through the power of social media i alway find out from people who i work with which football teams are travelling on train as a lot of the staff have pictures taken. Certain teams seem to travel on East Midlands more than others, Us, Derby and Leicester seem to travel the most, whilst out of the London clubs, QPR and Palace often use the train as well. Must be the Warnock connection.
