Based on JOC being injured long term.

This has several advantages.

It puts Berge in the position and system he is more used to.
Baldock has next to no end product in the final third so keeps him back in a more solid space and allows Freeman to have a chance to bomb forward as we know he can.
Robinson is a natural left back. Stevens has been woeful in defence so let's see what he can do further forward in front of him.

This would make us more solid and mean we could offer more going forward, you could have L. Freeman in the mix as well.

Not wanting to throw baby out of bath water but as Sky commentators saying now, might be time to try something new?

We have been shit since the restart I admitt that and some thing looks like it needs to change but I am not sure why this would be the answer. Dropping fleck probably one of our best players this season if not the best and has been for the last God knows how many seasons for berge who has been dog shit every time we have seen him? Then also play Steven's and Freeman out of position? I'd much rather play Luke Freeman on one of the wings than either of them if this was going to be tried but I fan see this been the formation we would change to if we was to change formation wilder doesnt like using wingers.

Shame Warnock has just taken the Boro job, he’d have improved us.

Could get behind that..

Likewise actually. Will connect the midfield with the attack more leaving the strikers less isolated, with protection in front of the defence and Norwood playing the 'quarter back' role.

A lot to like there with defenders in natural positions.

Can't hurt to try it?

Just rearranging the deckchairs on the Titanic, until the players shake off the jitters that they have suddenly developed.

After an amazing 3/4 of a season, and 3 amazing years prior, all playing the same innovative (and effective) formation, and now, in an unprecedented situation after 3 months of not playing, 3 poor results and the system needs to change? I disagree. We're in a bad patch, all teams have them, I trust Wilder to sort the lads out and get us out of it sooner rather than later, most likely through minor tweaks rather than wholesale transformations

352 for 4 years of success

3 games 1 was a draw and 1 away at Manchester United we need to change things.
This lockdown sent everyone loopy it seems.

Yes because what happened in league one four years ago is relevant to now.

Insanity.

Ah, the occasional “change the formation”/“we’ve been found out” clamour for a back 4 again. It’s a testament to how well we’ve done this season that it’s taken till the final third for it to materialise.

Past instances:
January 2017 – https://www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/change-of-formation.51363/

Dec 2017/Mar 2018 –

Aug 2018 –

Aug 2019 to Apr 2020 – strangely absent

I think there’s a real danger of overreaction at the minute, and really misreading the causes of what we’re seeing. Every time we’ve seen people pipe up about the need for a substantial formation change, or suggesting we’ve been “found out” it’s closely coincided with a run of bad form – be it the Walsall game in Jan 2017, the post-Coutts injury period, the start of last season, and right now.

Wilder’s got it consistently right where our main formation’s concerned. Binning a system the players know well hardly seems likely just off a bad patch. And as Wilder himself has highlighted, our schedule limits the time we have to train as a squad – it’s neither desired nor practical to switch it right now.

I think in the remaining League games let’s switch back to the old formation from the last three seasons with Freeman in the Duffy role and see what happens. I know that Wilder and Knill thinks this leads us to be too open to conceding at Prem level but we have conceded six in the last two anyway, (and should have been at least four more) so there doesn’t appear much to lose.

We might even create more than the one clear chance we have created in the last three games.

Our main strength is player relationships and a style that the players know well.

We need to make adjustments, but we can't let a poor spell make us rethink our game completely.

I think going back to having an attacking midfielder makes us so much more threatening.

You need to stick to football manager! It’s worked this season your just one of those overreacting. It’s fine we will beat Arsenal and you’ll just pretend this never happened.

Not at all, if that happens I'll do what I always do, bump this up and admit my delight of being wrong :)

Not suggesting 'binning the system', just trying something different if this doesn't continue to work. The distant past is almost irrelevant now, living in the here and now.

If we go 442 we’ll be like a shitter version of Burnley. And that may be the way we have to go, to stay in the division next season. We’ll need to bring in some wide midfielders and a big fucker up front though.

Our strength with the players we've got is Tuftyball with three at the back two overlapping centre backs. Teams couldn't cope with 3-1-4-2 in league 1 and the Championship. We adopted the more conservative 3-5-1-1 for the Premiership and it confused the opposition and gave us a good two thirds of a season beyond expectations.

With 3-1-4-2 we scored plenty of goals, with 3-5-1-1 the chances were limited but our defensive shape was one of the best in the division.

Its not the system thats the problem its the lack of quality players to fit into the gaps when the likes of JOC and Bash are injured. Our squad is paper thin and we don't have the numbers to cope with injury, suspension, loss of form and tiredness just now.

Changing the way we play is not an overnight decision. Yes we change shape many times during a game sometimes going to a diamond but the overall principle of what CW and AK have built is with overlapping centre backs and it would be madness to change it now.

Having said that giving 3-1-4-2 a go before the end of the season to see how we cope in the EPL would seem a sensible strategy now that we are safe.

If we were to go 442 with JOC out long term :( . Will see how today goes of course UTB

Could do with a change and getting an attacking midfielder but too late for this I imagine

Well there is one player available...

Maybe put Fleck on the left above ^

If he wasn’t riddled with injuries then maybe. It would be hard to rely on him

True though little other options out there :( though as I said on the Sturridge thread I think we could do with a big-name gamble just to give us a bit of a boost really
