According to The Sheffield Telegraph, United have "have launched a Europe-wide search for new players".
As a club we don't seem to have brought in many players directly from abroad and when we have there have been only a few notable successes and many failures.

Here are the ones that I've thought of so far. Any more for any more:-

Hit:-
Sabella
Nilsen
Veart
Borbokis
Dellas
Hodgson

Borderline:-
Suffo
Verde
Flo
Wirmola

Miss:-
De Goey
De Vogt
Smeets
Aksalu
Dong
Carney
Parrino
Calve

Nade - hit (for that goal v Arsenal alone)

Ribeiro - miss (faile dto live up to expectation)

Murphy - hit, shakey start but became a proper rock at centre half

I excluded Murphy because we signed him from Notts County (I think).
Likewise Nuddy, Pecsh, Li Tie etc signed from English clubs.

I think you're being a bit hard on De Goey - he should at least make the borderline group.

I also think there should be a group (we could call it "chico hamilton's penalty") and put Pedro Verde in that for me.

Ok. Slightly before my time I must admit. I have seem him slagged off on here before though and I always thought the infamous forum member had taken his name ironically (like Axel Smeets)

Ten Heuvel, Gyscrechts and Boussatta not even good enough to make the miss category!

I'd also put Shelton in the "borderline" category with Seck and Fathi going in the miss category although the latter proved later that he was a decent player.

Sun Ji Hai must be a hit for the best tackle Ive ever seen when he did that spinning M.Bison like corkscrew into someone infront of the kop, cant remember for the life of me who it was against though

Stupid questionsnd a bit of a mass generlisation
Like saying : shit players from shit clubs do they work ?

Plymouth Argyle, won-2-0 if I recall rightly, the ref didn't even blow the whistle!

George Donis, he wasn't very good.

Arturo Lupoli, netted against the pigs and did naff all else.

Why is it stupid to ask which foreign players from foreign clubs have been a hit or a miss?

Judging by the list we haven't signed a successful one for about 17 years which is an appalling record by any clubs standards. Have any other clubs of our size been as bad?

That doesn't mean we can't do much better in this market going forward. Which is hopefully what Adkins and Turnbull are going to achieve.

I'd be happy enough with another Nilsen and Hodgson in our current position.

I think all lists like this go to show is that players are bought by clubs for reasons other than improving the team. At least this was fairly clear in the case of the above Chinese player who was bought as a public relations exercise.

I just think that some managers get kick-backs with every transaction and that is one reason why there is so much buying and selling of players who hardly figure on the team sheet when they have arrived.

Of Ahmed Fathi, I can't remember who bought him and whether we swapped managers so he didn't get a game? but wasn't it Robson? Fathi was a pretty good player who for whatever reason just never got a chance at Bramall Lane you really only have to look at his credentials....

Despite a couple of starts, Warnock signed him it seems with an eye on the following season. Robson got rid as soon as he came in pretty much, such was the attractiveness of the Monty-Leggy combo in the middle for that opening game.

Hate to say it, but the other half of the city have proved that you can get good quality for a reasonable price if you shop abroad

According to Wikipedia Fathi has been capped 101 times by Egypt!
That must make him our second most capped international behind Hao Hai Dong who made 107 appearances for China.
