Lets just compare some of the players he had at his disposal in the championship to what he'd have if he took over...........

newcastle

steve harper, ryan taylor, jose enrique, steven taylor, coloccini, jonas gutierrez, alan smith ( was awesome against us ) nicky butt, kevin nolan, peter lovenkrands, andy carroll and others who have slipped my mind

blades

simonsen, calve, nosworthy, andy taylor, stephen quinn, nick montgomery, yeates, ched fucking evans, daniel bogdanovic, jamie ward, rob kozluk, johnny ertl and the rest

He got Newcastle up as champions, but lets face it nearly every manager in the football league would have got that team up last season. If he came to us it would be like moving from managing the harlem globetrotters to managing the sheffield sharks............... reserves!

plus, i doubt we'd be able to afford him anyway.

I think we should take a chance on another ex player when Speed goes to manage the taffs. Di Matteo, Poyet, Lee Clark are all examples of ex players that have made good managers

Isn't Hughton an ex-player in your book? He was a bloody good one in mine.

would have to agree that it looks like a lazy journo linking the latest out of work managet o an upcoming vacancy, but who knows?

yes coily if you're being pedantic then yes he is an ex player but i meant ex players looking for their 1st role after packing in and i think you know i meant that

If, or when if you believe the chatter, we find ourselves looking for another new manager, then it will need to be a safe pair of hands, not an exciting young manager who might or might not do OK. Whoever it is has to cope with a threadbare and underperforming squad with shattered confidence, against the back drop of coping with the weight of expectation for a club like us. First time manager, I think not.

The definition of 'a safe pair of hands' is what will cause the problem. Blackwell was a 'safe pair of hands', Megson is a 'safe pair of hands' too... (sorry Beighton, he wouldn't be my choice either)

Martin Peters, Adrian Heath and Bryan Robson. All ex-players too. What we need is a manager with experience of working miracles with no money. That bloke at QPR for example.

I think you're being a bit unfair on Hughton there and underplaying what a good job he did. It's not as simple as looking at that squad in the championship. So many were predicting a Leeds-esque fall, and it was precisely that bunch of players that had performed so miserably the year before. He's well-respected in the game, has done remarkably well, and is the type of manager I'd like to see at the Lane.

I was about to post something very similar. There was a general view that he had a bunch of players who thought they were too good for the Championship and getting them fired up and performing was no mean feat.

You're right. It's ok getting someone in with experience of only gaining promotion, but unfortunately that's not the main concern at United at the moment.

Who ever comes in will have a very hard job on their hands with little money and a poor team.

I'd be very tempted to bring Ron Reid back actually

Why?

Already seen that the academy is performing much better, results wise, since he was replaced by Pemberton. Plus I don't think he's the type of fella who'd be likely to manage a senior set up

These miracles you speak of didn't include promotion though did they? We had on miracle season under warnock, the promotion was achieved through investment. And let's not forget the playing squad we have at the moment still has the stamp of warnock on it, in morg and monty.

They thought they were too good for the championship because they were! You only had to look at their side when they played us at the lane, thier centre midfielders were Butt Nolan and Smith, 2 of them have England caps and the other has premier league hattricks to his name. He has done a great job with them this season and his sacking was a disgrace. However, last season they were absolute certs to go back up.

I seem to recall that they weren't certs at all at the start of the season. Most predicted that all the big players would leave and that Newcastle would plummet. Hughton galvanised the club, kept the big names, got them playing together, and yes they walked the league but only because he kept them together and the same players that got relegated are now 10th in the premiership. I am sure that he would do a good job at the lane.
Who else would you have that would seriously consider coming?

If Speed is to depart, my first choice would be Keith Hill from Rochdale. And failing that, I'd look at Lee Clarke but would worry what he could achieve without spending a few quid.

I would be gobsmacked if Hughton came. West Spam reported also to be after him if they sack Grant....what would you do if you were Hughton? The Daily Mail story looks pretty conclusive and we will be looking for a new manager come Tuesday. Now, quite apart from who is available....who would want to come to a struggling championship side with no money to spend....I know...I'll do it with a monthly contract:eek:
