Just as a reminder, the Inter Blades Football Club are always on the look out for decent players to add to the squad. Although we have on paper a decent sized squad, we’ve a few long term injury victims, a few with regular work and/or family commitments and a couple that are about to work abroad for a while. So although we usually manage to get a matchday squad of 13 or 14 (sometimes 16+), there are occasions when we struggle. However, we’re always looking for lads (Blades) to come in and put pressure on those currently deemed “starting 11” and improve the overall quality of the squad.
I’m sure most will be aware now due to my regular posts over the years, but the Inter Blades are the supporters’ team of Sheffield United and we play in the IFA (Internet Football Association - http://www.internetfootball.org.uk), which is a friendly league in which supporters teams from around the UK compete. There is no structured fixture list as such, you organise your own fixtures, usually against SUFC’s opponents fans of that particular Saturday, or alternatively against local supporter opposition or maybe the supporters of a team passing by the area. Our home matches are usually played at SUCC on Bawtry Road near Junction 34 of the M1 – Meadowhell (Graham Solley Sports Development Centre, formerly known as Sheffield United Cricket Club), and in general they kick off at 10:30 to allow plenty of time to get back into town for a few pre-match beers.
To clarify, despite the lack of a structured fixture list there is a league table. A maximum of 20 games can be played that qualify for league points (any subsequent fixtures are deemed to be friendlies) and you can only play an opponent twice (home and away obviously) in a season. In addition there is a knockout UK Cup competition and an end of season two day tournament (WorldNet). There are other mini-tournaments hosted by teams throughout the season, we indeed run our own, the “Mel Rees Memorial Trophy” which you may have heard/read about. This season we had the honour of playing the tournament on Bramall Lane!
If there’s any decent footballers out there that might be interested in representing the team you support on the pitch, then get in touch with me at [email protected] and I can fill you in on the rest of the details and we can take a look at you.
Inter Blades… 1 Forever Bury ‘A’… 1
The Inter Blades drew their second game of the season (first home game) against Bury last Saturday at Handsworth Sports College.
Last weeks hat trick hero James Kemp was missing due to the birth of his son the night before, and with our other strikers either injured or unavailable we kicked off the game without a recognised centre forward. Paul Kemp once again took up the target man role despite suffering from illness all week, and winger Chris Beckett helped out by starting up front with him. I’m not going to go into great detail of the game as the first 80 minutes were pretty much the same. It was a fairly even game, although every time we got the ball down and started playing football we looked like we would score. If we had managed to grab a goal in the first half then I believe we would have gone on to win as we looked solid at the back. When we weren’t playing football it was scrappy and we pretty much just battled it out with them without either side really going anywhere. Our defence was rarely troubled and I don’t think Ash had too much to do in goal, we pretty much controlled the midfield, but overall the team didn’t use the ball well enough and made bad choices when we were pressuring in their half. But as mentioned, there were a few occasions where we put some neat passing movements together that cut through Bury, and we maybe should have had a few goals as a result of those, we’ve just got make sure that we do that more often and the goals will come, especially when we have a few strikers fit and available!
So after a stalemate for 80 minutes Bury took the lead from a corner, I was a bit disappointed with the headed goal as we had enough big lads on the pitch to defend such a goal but he appeared to go unchallenged. To our credit though we rolled our sleeves up and pressured them hard for the last 10 minutes, which eventually resulted in an equaliser 4 minutes from time. Can’t remember who played him through, but veteran winger Will Storey, broke free of the last man and just beat the keeper to the bouncing ball, lobbing it over him and into the net from around about the penalty spot. We nearly claimed all three points in the last minute when Kieran broke away down the right, cut inside, then fired in a stunning shot from the right corner of the box into the top left hand corner of the goal, sadly the whistle was blown for offside just before he struck it.
Next up this Saturday – FC Buxton @ SUCC, Bawtry Road – 10:30 kick off.
Cheers,
Danny Brown
