I really wish people wouldn't trivialise football as simply 'people kicking a ball in a net'.

It's more than that. It's about the tactics, it's about the support from the common fan. It's about the sense of relief when you score that all important equaliser. It's about the sense of euphoria when you score that last minute winner!

Really you can trivialise anything. Watching Game of Thrones is just watching people pretend to be wizards and dragons. Playing chess is just moving blocks on a piece of stone. Even making love is really just sticking a fleshy stick in a moist hole.

The truth is we all have are joys in life and we should except each others for what they are!

P.s can people at the matches stop moaning about Sander Berge regardless of what he does. If he does a good pass it was 'lucky'. If he doesn't shoot from 50 yards 'he never shoots'. If he doesn't run out of position like a madman 'he never presses'. The fact is he's a very good player at this level and he has the second highest win percentage for any our players this season.

On the flip side, I wish the tv and media types wouldn’t sensationalise football to sell the product. Everybody who actually goes to the games knows the match itself only constitutes 50% of the match day experience. Eating, drinking and socialising with friends, family and other fans (as we discovered in covid) is equally important.
“Football” isnt and never will be television programme and the people who trivialise it…have obviously only seen it on tv.

Morning Sander

When people trivialise it, I think they’re meaning “…compared with disease, war and famine” rather than “…compared with Game of Thrones and chess”.
I'm not sure that's correct - I know a lot of people who don't care about football and love to belittle it and reduce it to 22 people kicking a ball about for 90 minutes. It's almost like they take a weird pride in trivialising it and reducing it to it's basic level. Meanwhile they'll happily spend hours speculating over the storylines of their favourite TV shows, movie franchises etc. At least footy's not scripted.

My dad asked me the other day why do you need to have a drink when you go to watch the football? He's a biker so I asked him why does he need to have a drink when he goes off for weekends away at bike rallies to admire someone else's vehicle, or when he goes to watch live bands? It's part of the social aspect of the interests you have (admittedly not for everyone). There seems to be a strange double standard when it comes to how football is judged compared to other interests.

People like different things?!? Perhaps it's just a perception that people are belittling only football. For example, you just belittled TV shows for being scripted.

If you can find a copy of these 'standards' where it states that football can be belittled but nothing else, then I'll accept your point. But otherwise, this is a case of people looking for a problem that isn't even there.

Bill Shankly had this one covered.
