If thats for all 125 years then surly the best season would have been pre 1900 or one of the FA cup winning seasons. Seems like a bollocks survey to me as everyones going to vote for someone theyve seen so recent players will have a huge advantage

Who submitted the nominations, a bunch of goldfish?

One of our top 3 seasons ever was a season in which we were relegated? And the season we won the league is not on the list? Really?

What a pointless exercise. It's not quite as bad as that list of our 50 greatest ever players in the Times that had Adrian Littlejohn ranked higher than Jimmy Hagan or some similar nonsense, but it's close.

Agree

Wasn't Needham England captain.

Where is Hagan.

Not worth the key board it was typed on.

The mass media assumes that football fans are incapable of remembering anything beyond a couple of seasons.

Relateively speaking there can be little or no dispute that our greates ever player was Nudger Needham and our greatest ever season was one of thos around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

I would pick Needham as our greatest ever. Hagan and Currie would round out my top 3, though there are others with strong arguments for the top 3 (Gillespie, Woodward, J Shaw, Hodgy).

Greatest season has to be 1897-8. Sad but true...

I genuinely think Brian Deane deserves to be in that 2nd list you state there. No arguments about the top 3 though.

There's an argument to be made that 1914-15 was our greates season - cup winners and 3 points off the title. Certainly the nearest we have come to a double. We can celebrate it's 100th anniversary next year :-)

Top three for greatest ever captain is

1. Ernest Needham
2. Billy Gillespie
3. George Utley (despite that he wasnt that popular with the players as there was a players protest about him having a testimonial)

Greatest ever player

1 Ernest Needham
2. Jimmy Hagan
3. Tony Currie

Top three for greatest ever season
1. 1897-98 (won the league but points wise 1899-1900 was the best as we got high points but Villa got more)
2. 1924-25
3. 1898-99 or 1901-02 (I can see Darren's point about 1914-15 but I think there were many people especially newspaper reporters saying that professional footballers shouldnt be playing competitive football because of the war and I think this affected the competitiveness of both the league and FA Cup a lot and we werent allowed to celebrate the win too much)

John Harris is easily our greatest ever manager (we didnt have a manager until 1932)

I am glad I didnt take part in this poll as I knew there would be embarrassing results with names coming out such as James Beattie, Alan Kelly and ROBERT PAGE! 2006-07 one of our best seasons????No way!!

The best ever player category is by some distance the worst; I can understand Tony Currie and PERHAPS Brian Deane but it's debatable as to whether Alan Kelly, Phil Jagielka and James Beattie were even the best player in their team let alone our best player of all time. No mention of Woody, Hagan, Shaw, Hodgkinson and so many others is disragceful.

Joke poll.

I had thought the worst poll of this type I had seen was one where Robbie Williams beat Mozart to Musician of the Millenium. However at least in that one Mozart got a mention.

Could it be even argued that Ken Furphy was a better manager than Warnock? Joke poll

Reminds me of an e-mail I got from the club years ago informing me that voting for the club's greatest-ever midfielder was under way and Michael Brown was in a clear lead with Dane Whitehouse second and Currie third. A few days later I was at Doncaster races with my son, then aged about ten, and we bumped into Ted Hemsley who rolled his eyes when I told him about it. I asked Ted to tell my lad how good TC was and Ted proceeded to play his part to perfection, waxing lyrical about how Currie was "different class" and how he made even an ordinary player like Ted look good.

I also find it embarrassing when some fans include Bob Booker into their best Blades X1. I liked him when he played for us but no way he is one of the best ever 100 Blades players
