Not the game we won (2-1?) but the 1-0 defeat at the Lane when Hughes was sent off. Also the game where Brooking continually called us 'Sheffield' on the commentary and Motson harped on about disparaging styles of play (well we all know that so don't state the obvious!)

Blade team included Kelly, Beesley, Tuttle, Bradshaw, Gage, Flo to name a few!

Was this the match where Hughes got sent off for kicking Tuttle up the arse?
I think I still have the highlights somewhere (on VHS!)

It has to be said that was a superb team goal. If we ever scored a goal like that i think the kop would spontaneously combust.

It was 2-0 wasn't it?

I'm sure Cantona made it two with that chip of his. My first FA Cup game, I believe.

That could be a different one, thinking about it...

We played Man Utd in 2 successive seasons at the Lane in the 3rd round - both on the same day - 9th Jan. In 1994 we lost 1-0, Hughes getting the goal and in 1995 we lost 2-0, Cantona getting one of the goals with that chip.

We did seem to get them a lot in the Cup in those days didn't we?

Didn't we lose 1-0 to a McClair goal too, perhaps the season we were promoted? Plus the glorious 2-1 win. I had a poster up of Hodges celebrating his goal for years :D

We played them in the Cup 4 times in 6 seasons. Oddly enough, those 4 ties, all at the Lane, are the only times we have played Man Utd in the Cup in our entire history.

I remember United having much the better of the 1993-4 game, though we couldn't score to save our lives then, but when I watched the game at home later it was apparent that no one at the BBC had actually noticed this.

That's a bit weird!

We aren't going to get them this year either...

That was the match when Charlie Hartfield was sent off after about 15 minutes, and as has been pointed out, was the year after we lost to the Hughes goal.

Sad, sad, sad anorak fact to follow .....

In the completely unwatchable unless you're a Blade film "When Saturday Comes", Cantona's chip can be seen on the TV in the corner of the club as being Manure's second goal. They also did the penalty scenes at half time in that match. Seemed to go on forever.

Why it was decided to have a film ending with a Cup semi-final which is staged at one of the participating team's grounds is mystifying, mind you.

Partly because Sean Bean kept hitting the bar!

Actually we had managed to get 2 goals just the week before in a 2-1 win over Oldham at the Lane - however prior to that we had not scored in our last 6 games, had managed only 1 goal (an own goal v Chelsea on 27/11/93) in our previous 9 games and only 3 goals (that og, a Whitehouse penalty v Norwich on 6/11/93 and Hodges' goal v SWFC on 23/10/93) in our previous 13games.

So 1 goal by a United player in open play in 13 games! Them were the days....

And one of the goals against Oldham was a penalty as well...

I think I'm right in saying that 1993-4 was the last time United got knocked out of both cups at the first hurdle.

Poor old Willie Falconer. He was credited with that before it was eventually given to Clarke as an own goal. He wasn't exactly brilliant, and he even lost that goal ;)

Look at our results from Oct 93 to Feb 94

On 2/10/93 we drew 3-3 at Southampton (Falconer, Flo 2). Our results were then as follows:

18/10/93 Blackburn A D0-0
23/10/93 Wednesday H D1-1 (Hodges)
31/10/93 Coventry A D0-0
6/11/93 Norwich H L1-2 (Whitehouse pen)
20/11/93 Villa A L0-1
24/11/93 Newcastle A L0-4
27/11/93 Chelsea H W1-0 (og)
4/12/93 Swindon A D0-0
7/12/93 Man Utd H L0-3
11/12/93 Everton H D0-0
18/12/93 Wimbledon A L0-2
26/12/93 Liverpool H D0-0
29/12/93 Arsenal A L0-3
1/1/94 Oldham H W2-1 (Ward, Whitehouse pen)
3/1/94 West Ham A D0-0
9/1/94 Man Utd H FAC L0-1
15/1/94 Blackburn H L1-2 (og)
22/1/94 Wednesday A L1-3 (Whitehouse pen)
12/2/94 Coventry H D0-0

We then went to Ipswich on 22/2/94 and lost 3-2 (Cork, Carr). So between the Southampton and Ipswich matches, we played 19 games and our players only got 2 goals from open play in that period - both scored by midfielders. Our forwards did not score a goal of any sort for 4 and a half months!

I think the McClair goal beat us in the Sixth Round in 1990 but we played pretty well. Their goal came from a corner which should have been a goal kick and if Tony Agana's leg had been a couple of inches longer it would have been 1-1.

I have the 94-95 Cup game on video I think. We look good after Hartfields red card, probably the better team, and we should have had a penalty for a foul on Nathan Blake.

Absolute stone waller that penalty we should have got, Bruce literally kicks Blake into the air.

If Cantona had been sent off in the Cup Match of 1994/95, he would have been suspended when they played Crystal Palace and then him kicking out at the Palace fan would never have happened.

We did play well in that match, indeed. It was a case of tiring legs in the last ten minutes, really.
