Shame we weren't playing ARSEnal...Penaltit box
Think of todays pitches, we have a curved line at the edge of the 18yd box so all players are the same distance from the penalty spot when a kick is taken.
This is the same idea, its so the ball is the same distance from either goal post when a goal kick is taken.

The arc was out there so players were guaranteed a decent run up when taking a penalty. It's always seemed daft to me that we need the centre circle and the arc on the edge of the box. The ref can 'judge' ten yards for free kicks (and corners), so why do we need such an exact measurement for kick offs (nobody is that arsed about encroaching anyway) or penalties (just stay outside the 18 yard box - that's good enough even if it's less than ten yards).
Agree totally , pitch markings as they stand are a bit of a blast from the past .It's always seemed daft to me that we need the centre circle and the arc on the edge of the box. The ref can 'judge' ten yards for free kicks (and corners), so why do we need such an exact measurement for kick offs (nobody is that arsed about encroaching anyway) or penalties (just stay outside the 18 yard box - that's good enough even if it's less than ten yards).
