This picture popped up on facebook. I thought it was a wind up but then found another picture.
I had never seen them before so thought I would share.

Disappointed with the proper crossbar. Ropes were under-rated.

Think of todays pitches, we have a curved line at the edge of the 18yd box so all players are the same distance from the penalty spot when a kick is taken.

This is the same idea, its so the ball is the same distance from either goal post when a goal kick is taken.

It's always seemed daft to me that we need the centre circle and the arc on the edge of the box. The ref can 'judge' ten yards for free kicks (and corners), so why do we need such an exact measurement for kick offs (nobody is that arsed about encroaching anyway) or penalties (just stay outside the 18 yard box - that's good enough even if it's less than ten yards).

The arc was out there so players were guaranteed a decent run up when taking a penalty.

United were indirectly responsible for this. Someone (I think Billy Gillespie) had the team lined up on the edge of the box when we faced a pen, to stop a long run up, which was the fashion at the time. The arc was put there to stop that.

Agree totally , pitch markings as they stand are a bit of a blast from the past .
Along with the penalty arc I'd get rid of the centre circle and 6 yard box . Just let the keeper kick from the ground anywhere within the area. Radical I know
