Chaos with traffic down near the lane.....

Please be aware that Bramall Lane is closed to traffic and pedestrians due to a problem with a dangerous Gas Cylinder on a building site next to the Football Ground.

Can't see any reason to shut it for 24 hours. I'd give it a couple of hours at the most.

BREAKING: Bramall Lane area sealed off
By Mike Russell
ROADS around Sheffield United's Bramall Lane ground have been sealed off after a blaze broke out on a hotel building site on Cherry Street.
Residents in the area are being told to stay inside their homes.

Acetylene and propane cylinders are reported to be on fire and the area has been sealed as a precaution in the event of any explosions.

Cherry Street, Shoreham Street and Bramall Lane are all shut causing severe traffic congestion in the area.

Three fire appliances are dealing with the situation, from the Central and Mansfield Road stations, as well a ladder platform.

Police are refusing to let anyone in or out of the cordoned off area.

Stadium evacuation affects operations
Posted on: Tue 22 Apr 2008

Many parts of United's Bramall Lane operations are currently closed owing to a potentially dangerous situation in the neighbouring hotel development.

Club staff were evacuated shortly after opening on Tuesday morning on the advice of the Fire Service's commanding officer following the discovery of a damaged oxy-setaline cylinder on the seventh floor of the hotel development.

An exclusion-zone has been placed on the area as a safety measure and this includes Bramall Lane, the Valad (South) Stand, Cherry Street and the Bramall Lane pitch.

As a result all operations on the South Stand side of the ground have been suspended, the Ticket Office, Promotions Office and Superstore will remain closed on Tuesday, and events scheduled in South Stand have been postponed or switched to John Street.

Some staff and parts of the operation are currently being carried out in the John Street Stand until further notice.

The Fire Service will be advising club officials at periodic intervals throughout the day with regard to progress of making the whole site safe and a potential reopening of the full operation.

Posted on: Tue 22 Apr 2008

Sheffield United expect to return to normal business tomorrow after more than 150 people were evacuated when an acetelyne cylinder caught fire on the construction site of the new hotel at Sheffield United's Bramall Lane ground.

Club staff, businesses within the Blades Enterprise Centre and construction workers were asked to leave offices and the development at 8.50am this morning after the cylinder, located on the seventh floor of the new Copthorne hotel, caught fire.

The cylinder, used for welding, was extinguished after an hour by fire crews however under national fire service guidelines the area is now under investigation and could be cordoned off for a 24 hour period.

Emergency teams were on standby as police closed Bramall Lane and Cherry Street.

The main offices and reception at Bramall Lane, ticket office and Blades Superstore were closed throughout today. Conference and banqueting operations remained open but were relocated to the Capital One Stand on John Street.

The H&S regulations and guildlines on this kind of container/substance suggests it needs around 24hours to become safe.

suggests :D

they suggest i should use a harness working on a roof :D

better safe than sorry though with gas and residents near.

Jesus!

Just about half an hour ago, coming back from football training, my piggy mates dad told me about this and i laughed it off, thinking he was having me on!

You couldn't even get onto the John Street part near London Road - any road that led to anywhere near it was blocked off completely - was nearly late for Brownies! Traffic was much worse than I expected it to be.

Although they appeared to be letting traffic past Golden Lion - they were heading down that road anyway

i managed to get down shoreham street no problems
