Would you play him today?

He is not having a bad season, but do we need a defensive midfield player who's job is to protect the back four?

Someone on another thread stated that we are too scared to lose that wd have forgottent how to win; sums it up for me and is the reason why doyle plays.
He hardly makes a forward pass, only lately has he started to get into the box and has provided (I believe) no goals and no assists.
We need to be forward thinking, we need to be on the front foot and we not only need players with this mindset but a captain too.
For this reason I would play Coult or Holt in his position?

Clough will pick the team suited for a shit or bust , first match of 3 . He will pick players who he would want in the trenches with him , so Doyle is a yes for me . We don't want any deserters today , the stakes for both Clough and club are becoming too high.

Pity Collins is waiting to be court marshalled.

Err I have just stated why he should not be in the team for this match. Backs against the walls, ideal man.
Creating things from open play I would have an alternative, if we play to our strengths and not invite people on he has no place in the team when playing at home.

No.
He's actually proving me wrong this season too, but no- I don't think we need him or that type of player for 90% of the games in this league

So we play with no defensive midfielder at all ? If we don't play Doyle we still have to play a player in there to protect the back four ,no team does without and it is fantasy football to even contemplate it. Doyle is the best option we have at the moment in that position.

Personally I would still play him although I understand where you're coming from
He gets a lot of stick bits of which are deserved but in a team of crisp packets we need someone who can and always will put their foot in... Especially if his partner if you like is someone like Reed or Baxter .
He should be getting 7 or 8 goals a season bearing in mind he has a decent left foot and plays every game

But yes I would play him

Doyle scored a peach vs Cov

I'm sure that he doesn't get forward as much as he would like to as he carries the responsibility to protect the back 4, which he does really well until they fuck up from a set piece or a lofted ball in / cross fr wide and lose the header.

When Doyle doesn't play we are a soft touch. We all notice it when he is out. It's testimony to him that he stays fit and makes himself available all the time.

We need to look elsewhere in Midfield to see why we are not dominating. We also need a commanding pair of CB and play more of the game in the oppo half rather than invite them into us.

And the alternative to Doyle is what (and for the love of god please don't say a second striker)?

While ever we have Coutts performing like he is, I'm struggling to question any of the other midfielders.

Flynn Reed Doyle Baxter Murphy

Done

*Edit - that means "Done" as in finished, not the free scoring forward. Although the same applies for both.

Other midfielders can tackle ya know!?
You don't have to have NO creativity to be able to break up other teams play. I think because Doyle offers nothing else people overstate his defensive abilities.

Until we have someone else who gets stuck in and does the dirty work (i'm not saying creative players can't, but the ones we have couldn't tackle a ham sandwich at the moment) Doyle has to play.

I think Doyle will play, and after all the criticism its Sod's law he will score.

I completely disagree that he offers nothing else ,he plays more balls to the wingers and forwards than any other player in the team ,people have preconceived ideas about him but if you watch his game he contributes a lot more. His assist record (which I think is bollocks ,as I also agreed with in a Baxter thread) and his goalscoring record should be better though.

It was hilarious watching Reed try to put himself about a bit the other night :-)

He's got plenty of qualities but thunderous intimidatory tackling is not one of them.

My problem with him is the rashness of his tackles, Clough has commented that we don't have much height in our team therefore we shouldnt be giving away fouls around our area. This doesn't seem to effect Doyle who smashes into every tackle where ever it may be even if he has no chance of winning the ball.

I think he gets caught out to often by quick midfielders, but I agree he does contribute to the team as well with his balls out to wingers etc. If Wallace ever becomes fit then he would come in for me over Doyle and then next season we need to sign a long term replacement for him.

Let's see how we do today without him....

Seems to have worked.

Typical Utd performance of late, go in to our she'll when we should be exploiting The weaker team. Played well until,we scored then backs to the wall.

So wish the second goal, had nog been disallowed we are so in need of confidence and to play the remainder of gag match starting with a two goal cushion would have been just what the dr. Ordered.
