As confirmed on football heaven tonight by David Weir Doyle is going to carry on as captain this season. I imagine this will mean he will start the season as one of the two holding midfielders

hmmm, well lets hope he puts more effort in than last season and weir has the balls to drop him if he plays crap.......

I've no doubt whatsoever he's the sort that wouldn't have the slightest problem in doing that/making an example.

If Weir has come in all fresh and seen out set of players and thought that he is the best man for the job, then how can we say he's wrong. As Foxy said, I think he's the sort of bloke that would drop his captain if he didn't play as expected.

Disappointed on first reaction, but I'm going to trust Weir on this one as I can't think of many options as a replacement other than Collins ?

I haven't seen any pre-season games. How has he played?

I haven't seen any pre season games either but let me make a guess that his performances have been shit. How is that for you?

This is terrible news and we have no chance if Doyle plays in the vast majority of games.

I fear this will be Weirs first mistake, but I'll hear him out on this one.

Personally I would've hoped that he'd shaken things up a bit by giving the armband to one of his new signings or possibly someone like Harry.

Of all the players in the side, Doyle and KMac need the biggest rocket up their arses. And he's less likely to drop Doyle now that he's captain

Guessed wrong.
The game I saw had Doyle doing his job in front of the back four quite well imo. Can't understand the witch hunt on this bloke - again, no world beater and we've had better in this role, but he is never as bad as some would suggest. But bashing our players abilities is a favourite sport on here at times.

Doyle is a good player when he sticks to what he is good at, sitting infront of the back 4, as you say. Doyle's problem is that he tries to cover too much pitch however he is too slow and always 5 minutes late for a tackle when he gets there. When he does this then he is fucking useless to us. As a captain he will be aided by not having Kitson or Robson anywhere near the squad and hopefully back to the player and captain he was the year before last. Let us hope so anyway.

I was thinking Coady would be his replacement, however I am starting to think he has been brought in to play alongside Doyle and give him some legs.

Well i've been hoping for Bodie and Doyle, obviously wasn't a Bodie available. Next best thing is Coady and Doyle i suppose.

Doyle like many faded badly last season , perhaps the system was wrong as others faded too, he has been ,,,capable in the team at times the season before played reasonably well, and as we cant quite afford modric just now , we may have to encourage him to better things .

Doyle is two inches away from scoring a wonder goal. How many times did he hit the woodwork last season with some long range beautys? Doyle is no world beater, but I dont think hes bad. Occasionally frustrating and I have taken the piss out of him on here before, but its tongue in ass really.

Doyle was a poor player amonst many last season. However he was a terrible captain. He needs to improve on both, drastically.

I'm all for giving people a second chance, but I saw zero leadership skills from him in the games I saw.

For fook sake mica spit it out man , and tell us how you really feel , this beaten around the bush B-S. does my head in. ;) .

Cant say im over impressed with the decision to be honest, would like to have seen big harry have it or kmac.

Short memories ,he was excellent the season before ,with Macdonald when he had better players round him ,he stagnated last season along with about 18 other players and manager.

Not sure Maguire is ready yet for the burden of captaincy. Which leaves Doyle, Collins and maybe McMahon as the senior players to do it. McMahon Isn't a certain starter so one of two and Weir obviously thinks Doyle can do the business. I expect him and Coady to settle into the holding roles. If either don't work we have alternatives and Weir has the bottle to drop his captain if he thinks it's needed.

We have a lot more competition for places now in central midfield, so if it doesn't work with Doyle I'll be very disappointed if Weir doesn't try something different. I've been impressed with Coady and also think McGinn could do very well for us.

Yes, if you are talking just about his contribution as a player on the field. I'm not sure that assessment can apply to his leadership skills, which have been visibly lacking. Less of an issue when things were going well in the season before last - it's when things go less well that you need the captain to lead from the front. Can't say I've ever seen that in him, but in the spirit of fresh starts happy for him to be given another go at it. Weir and Carsley have been captains at their clubs, and I doubt if he's lacking in that regard he'll be kept on.

How do you know this ?

All because someone isn't playing at the top of their form doesn't mean they are a bad captain .

Ok, on the pitch at least he was a very poor captain. Not talkative, undemonstrative, always one rush of blood away from a needless red card and I think during one match didn't Robson have to stop him chewing out one of the youg'uns?

He is very talkative on the pitch and certainly tries to guide, cajole, encourage and sometimes bollock the players, in my opinion.. As for his disciplinary record...apart from the red card against Scunny,I thought it was very good .
