Why would players who have 'found their level', ever want to get promoted?
It seems evident that had United been promoted, a wholesale change of personnel would have had to take place to avoid immediate relegation. So isn't there a financial motive for players NOT get their team promoted?
I'm not suggesting this phenomenon is necessarily conscious but mightn't it explain the drop off in form halfway through the season? The only players who have a stake in promotion are therefore the young ones who haven't yet found their level and are still progressing within their trade.
For this reason isn't a comprehensive youth policy and trust in a young team the best way forward for a team in the mess we are now in?
Would people tell me the flaws in my logic please?
