Reports in France claim that Nantes striker Dennis Oliech is set to join Sheffield United on a trial period.
The Kenyan international could join the exodus of players from the French club following their relegation, and will look to impress Bryan Robson at Bramall Lane.
The Blades have tabled an ambitious £4 million bid for Everton striker James Beattie, but Oliech would represent a cut-price option should they fail to land their number one target.
United are working hard to reshape their squad following their own relegation, and have been pursuing a deal for Australian midfielder David Carney.
The Sydney FC star was due to fly to England for talks with The Blades but his current employers are refusing to let him do so until they receive a cash offer from the Yorkshire club.
Carney has now pleaded with Sydney FC not to block his potential move to Bramall Lane.
"There are a number of English clubs who want to meet with me," Carney told the Sheffield Star. "Like any other player, I am really keen to explore those options.
"It has been a bit frustrating the last couple of days. One minute I am going to England for talks, the next minute I am not.
"I'd really like the club to put themselves in my shoes. I don't believe they are doing that.
"I want the opportunity to go and at least see what they have got to offer. All I'm asking is a fair deal."
