It's a double-edged sword isn't it? Either pay those wages and stay up or recruit on the cheap and risk relegation. On the other hand, you can't improve on the squad if you can't recruit new players because the ones you've deemed not good enough can't be moved on. It's a ticking time bomb because eventually these teams will go down due to a lack of progression and when they do, they'll be in a much much worse position than we were.
Paying Danny Ings silly money is probably why Villa want to sell Archer instead of blooding him into their team - he's probably one of the few saleable assets they have that might accept the wages of a team willing to take a chance on him.
As for buying players like Hamer and Anel, then selling them on for a profit, I think that's the route we have to go down. And to be fair, that's not a bad incentive for new players we want to sign who may be willing to accept our wage structure/relegation clauses.
