was posted as last nights on planet barga , strange, only saw when I got in after nights , so not verified it , still good goal still wouldnt mind him
it was from 18th april 2007 in the copa del rey
was just a reminder

Is this goal not a spoof ?? serious question, because if not it is incredibly like the Maradonna goal from 1986 against England.......

Mans a genuine genius. Better than Ronaldo because he doesn't have to cheat.

Nah, Ronaldo's better. Stronger, quicker, just as good with the ball, can strike it more cleanly and good in the air. Plus he has proved he can thrive in various teams that don't base their whole style of play around him.

Given the choice (which would be nice) I'd rather have Ronaldo in my team every time.

Messi does it week in week out without chucking himself on the deck and getting the face on. Don't get me wrong its not quite a Richard Cadette V's Pele argument because both are exceptional but I know who I would rather have as a player for the team rather than just for himself.

He's lazier from what I've seen of him live, also offers less to the team... But when they give him the ball, he delivers.

Ronaldo scores goals but no assists
Messi scores the same amount of goals but assists for just as many.

Messi used to work alot harder for the team when he played on the wing. I am guessing it is through instruction that he has stopped.

This is always my main argument. Alongside Messi's chance conversion, chances created and goals from open play are far superior stats to those of Ronaldo's. Absolutely no doubt for me.

Ronaldo for me.

My reasoning is - He has proved it in the premiership. How would Lionel Messi fair on a cold Wednesday night at the Britannia Stadium getting booted by Robert Huth. He's fine in La Liga where ability-wise it's superior to the Premiership but teams don't press as much. Until Messi plays in the premiership he's unproven for me. Same goes for Ibrahimovic.

There's no doubting they're world class players but the premiership is a different ball game altogether.

Look at Soldado - he's toss!
Negrado, Aguero, David Silva, Cazorla have all proved they can mix it in the prem but a lot that come over from abroad fail.

Nah, I disagree. On that basis, pele and maradonna can't be considered either. If messy came up against Robert Hutu , I'd be surprised if it wasn't double figures. 'Doing it' in the premier league is overrated. It doesn't prove a players ability per se.

I also hate that 'messi can never be called the greatest ever until he wins a world cup'. Bullshit, how can he solely do that?? He is the greatest player of all time for me.

Course you can. The premiership wasn't around then and all leagues around the world pretty much just had homegrown players. The premiership is the best league in the world. It's proven by how many "world class" players have failed in it. Juan Veron & Diego Forlan for example.

It was Man U and Chelsea that failed not Veron. Class act. And a Blade.

I enjoyed Ronald missing that sitter against us. Otherwise it's Messi every time for me.

And I don't know a centre forward in the world wouldn't do the same.

Watch this instead. Seriously, watch it I think even Ronaldo is in there somewhere.

Roughly half those players are not even defenders. My nana could have humiliated Paul Scholes, for example.

Out of interest and in spite of all our money, wasn't last years Champions League an all German affair?

I'd like to see that, but lets just concentrate on players in there like Cannavaro and other world cup winners then :)

I know how good messi is. But your assertion that he doesn't need to cheat is plainly wrong.

I stand by the fact that most reasonable people see him as a positive role model in the way he conducts himself on and off the pitch. Perfect? No he isn't but he has only ever been sent off once in his career (never for Barca by the way) so I would suggest he isn't a cheat, neither does he break the rules of the game often enough to warrant getting sent off.

Oh and I didn't really see a deal in that footage to show him in the same light as I view Ronaldo (who is also an exceptional player by the way).

I'm guessing I'm not going to change your mind and your not going to change mine so I will happily leave it at that.

If you can't make your mind up....we'll have to buy them both!

I'm not denying that. I feel Bayern are the best in the world at present. With Barca a close 2nd.

In the last 9 years ...
only Barca and Real have won La Liga.
Bayern have won 5 titles with Dortmund (2) with Stuttgart & Wolfsburg getting 1 each.
Man U (5), Chelsea (3) & Man C (1).

Over the last 5 years...
the bundesliga has been won by an average of 9.4pts. Bayern won it by 25pts last year!!!! Twenty Five!
La Liga's average win is 8pts.
The Premiership just 5pts.

I therefore suggest the premiership is a much tighter league and is the best in the world.

In Spain the golden boot winner over the last 5 years has accumulated the following tallies - 46, 50, 40, 34 & 32. That is truly ridiculous. No player will score that amount in the premiership. Cole & Shearer share the record at 34.

Since the premiership began 21 years ago only 7 players have broken the 30 goal mark. Ronaldo being one of those 7 players.

So the average golden boot over the last 5 years is as follows:
England - 24
Germany - 26.4
Spain - 40.4

The premiership is by far the best league in the world without having any of the top 3 clubs in the world (IMO). The gap between Bayern & Dortmund and Barca & Real versus the rest of the league is vast... or has been vast over the last few years.

At present the top 4 in the premiership are separated by 6pts.
In Spain 5pts separate the top 3 with 4th place 16pts behind the leaders.
In Germany Bayern are already 7pts clear. Dortmund are 12pts behind - Dortmund were the 2nd best team in Europe only 8 months ago.

Nah, i'm sorry those leagues are a joke.

I think the Premier League is the most exciting, but the quality of the top Geman and Spanish sides is better than the top teams in our league in my opinion.

The style and tempo of play in Spain compared to here is so different that certain players struggle when they come over here. That's always going to happen and there's plenty of occassions where players go to Spain and can't do what they did over here, too.

EDIT: Also, the money given to clubs in the Premier League compared to the teams in the bottom half of La Liga is astronomical.

It's clichéd but as I see it, the difference is that the main attributes in the Premier League are strength and pace, in Spain it's technique and positional intelligence and in Germany it's pace and technique. Two years ago, Athletic Bilbao tore Manchester United apart; Athletic finished 6th in Spain while Man U lost the title on goal difference.

There is no "best league". I'd rather watch Espanyol v Betis than Cardiff v Stoke but at the same time, Real v Valencia would probably be bettered by Arsenal v Liverpool. Just.

You're also spot on with the TV money point; in Spain it's a bit of a joke.

mattbianco1 fair point on the goals scored but you're talking about the two best players in the world, playing in two of the best teams in the world. Excluding those, the top scorer has scored 28 (2012-13, Falcao), 24 (2011-12, Falcao), 20 (2010-11, Negredo), 27 (2009-10, Higuain) and 32 (2008-09, Forlán). This season, Agüero and Suárez should both score 30 goals; Suárez is on course for 40 (having scored 20 in 17 games).

MB you make some good points but each one can easily be countered. I honestly believe you cannot outright say which is the "best" league. If you were to push me I would say the Budesliga because it encourages fans with realistic ticket prices, you can watch Bayern for around 200 Euros per season for instance. They are capped so one team cannot just buy the league which I think is a benefit and the quality of the football is a good cross between English pace and strength and Spanish technique.

Budesliga is a better all round spectacle for affordability, financial sustainability and outright quality (proven by the last Champions League final)

Your point about the tightest league being the best is part valid as well, but your league could be tight just because everyone is as average as everyone else. In effect the best league is the most average then? This season the Premier League is close because Man United are shit, Man City have bought half a new squad at levels no one else can work to and Chelsea have the Special One back and Abramovich's money. Liverpool and Arsenal are possibly the only sustainable models at the top right now. But each one keeps tripping over against teams like Southampton and Swansea?!? This is the best league? Really?

I would suggest that the reason for Spain having the highest golden boot totals is because it has the two best players in the world combined with the fact that as you state Barca and Real are so far ahead of the rest. As for it only being a two horse race, you are only as good as your last season as it were.......
