If we had a solid central midfield, it'd allow us to play two "proper" wingers to get forward without having to worry about leaving ourselves exposed at the back with our fullbacks (ok, just SJH!) pushing up.

This would allow for a more footballing approach to scoring goals rather than all that route one business.

Without trying to sound like a doom and gloom merchant, how much more can Brown offer us than Speed?

Who is going to be the creative MF player if Brown and Speed start together?

He was once a legend but I don't want him back, he's just not the same player as he was for us in the past.

We need someone who can create things, it's OK winning the ball back but if we've got no-one to create chances, how are we gonna score.

i hope we aren't going to be as predictable as, get the ball, play if out wide and cross it in. Cos with the players being touted about, that's what it seems like to me.

Lets remember Speed is 39, Brown is a bit more youthful, if we could secure Brown on a longer term deal then it gives us a base to work around in midfield.

I don't know where people get their information that Brown isn't creative. Surely you watched him all them years ago for the Blades? How many assists and goals did he get?

Also Speed has 2 assists from 4 games I believe, not bad for somebody who isn't creative. To be honest, some of the balls that Speed provides are truly fantastic. I don't envisage a problem.

Please don't go on about the past, yer sound like a pig fan. Brown was an attacking MF player all those years back with us. But his game has changed now. He's more a DMF player. I bet anyone that he will not be scoring goals like he did for us before, if he comes back.

Yes Speed has set up a couple of goals so far, but he's not gonna do it all season. He breaks play up and sets things off, not creates things.

Look I've been moaning for 3-4 years about a creative MF player, everyone has, all the managers have but nothing has happened. I just can't understand it.

I'd say it makes us very 1 dimensional, if all we're gonna do is play it out wide and get crosses in, they'll just pack the MF and not let us have the room to do that. What is plan B?

I'd have Speed over Brown any day. We still need to be creative.

Are you telling me that Brown can no longer play AMF? Are you telling me that he has suddenly just lost his touch? That he now only sticks to a defensive role because he can't go forward? Perhaps it is just teams wanting to utilize an attribute he has.

But at the moment, what is plan A?

A great deal of play seems to bypass the midfield completely. A couple of big lads at centre back and mostly, we're buggered!

With a bit of pace, we tend to look more dangerous playing down the wings... Quinn's goal at Blackpool being a prime example after Sharpy's cross from the right.

We need the basics first though. Players who can put a foot on the ball and use it wisely.

I agree completely Robbie. He'd come back as AMF for sure. He might pick up fewer cards too!

Footballers do as they are told, end of! If Spurs wanted him as a defensive midfielder, then that is what he does. If Blackie decided he wanted him to now revert to a more attacking role, that is what he would be doing.

How he sees himself might be interesting, but that isn't the deciding factor!

KEVIN Blackwell has admitted the international break has thwarted his efforts to make an early breakthrough in the transfer market.

The Sheffield United manager had hoped to unveil Michael Brown last night after spending the past week locked in talks with Wigan aimed at securing the former Bramall Lane favourite's release on a three month loan.

However the ankle injury that his fellow midfielder Jason Koumas sustained on World Cup qualification duty with Wales has complicated the situation with Steve Bruce, Blackwell's counterpart at the JJB Stadium, preferring to assess the 28-year-old's condition before deciding whether to sanction the deal.

Insisting that progress could still be made before Saturday's visit to
Derby County Blackwell, who also hopes to capture a new left-winger, told The Star: "It looks as if I'm going to have to wait until players get back to their clubs.

"There's still a chance that something can get sorted-out in time (for Derby) but, as I've maintained all along, I'm only going to bring in the right people.

"I'm not going to get rushed into anything or start doing business just for the sake of it.

"Whatever we do has to improve what we've already got."

That suggests United, who have refused to reveal the names on their wanted list, are pursuing a select group of targets rather than adopting a scatter-gun approach to recruitment.

The battle for South Africa 2010 has also impacted upon United's preparations for Pride Park in other ways as Gary Naysmith, Keith Gillespie and David Cotterill are not expected to report back for training until 24 hours before the match.
