Brentford and 'passing football'

I agree crap footballers at fullback will seriously cramp our effectiveness in this system. It's clear we need replacements in various positions, but I'm happy with what we're working towards.

Let's not forget how good we were in the first game. The signs of hope are there, but we need to be realistic based on the quality of squad Weir inherited.........

..........and the fact that the first game was at home against 10 man Notts County :)

But yes, no reason to be too downhearted. The only unrealistic thing on show of late was most people's enthusiasm for what Weir could do in such a short space of time. You can't polish a turd, just flush it away and eat something nicer for tomorrow's effort.... :)

Let's hope we can reinvest the McDonald cash, and if so we can get some decent replacements in.

The situation illustrates a difference between two football philosophies.

[*]One where the team takes some risks with their passing, the players will attempt difficult, ambitious passes because it increases the chance of creating chances.

[*]The other where it's all about keeping possession and keeping the ball within the team. They will slowly build attacks and hope to find a good shooting chance.

I believe a lot of fans/posters are concerned that the team is not good enough for the latter philosophy. It does not mean they want us to play continual long ball.

But good enough for the former? I think it's back to the drawing-board on that one, mate.

Charles "POMO" Hughes loved his videos and statistics. Whatever happened to him?

It's very telling that in Jurassic S2 we are content to let the likes of Semi-Pro and Quickfix take us back 20 years without a murmur, but David Weir is expected to change his whole philosophy after one defeat.

The truth is, however much you try to disguise it, some of you love alehouse football.

"Kick it long; Kick it hard; Kick it high." I think we should have it on the club badge. No wonder the great nonentity Graham Arnold, after a tap-in from a Dinosaur Dave assist, was able to make us the laughing stock of world football.

There are times when I'm ashamed to support our club.

Thanks for the same contribution you've made 500 times before. Sadly, you've missed the point for the 500th time.

Hoof V Style. It's that simple, eh?

If I was ever ashamed to be a Blade, it would be watching 4th division Burton pop in the winnner at BDTBL. But I'm not.

Thank you for your 501st response. Your dedication to your cause, however misplaced; however outdated; however ugly, is admirable.

I've never seen a football fan so incapable of grasping that there are more than two football styles in football.

The example given showed a player with the option of making two short distance passes. I've explained that two different football philosophies would encourage him to do different things.

Is it really that difficult to understand?

Stop it, stop it...............

Just for Pinchy;

Option 1 was Style
Option 2 was Hoof

Agree George had a good game and agree I would start the changes at full back.

I can't see Westlake improving as a defender and he doesn't compensate by being particularly good at crossing. The sooner McMahon is back the better but he wasn't on the bench yesterday so perhaps his return isn't imminent.

Possibly Hill at left back, I suspect he can't adapt to what Weir wants in passing. Maybe Callum if we (the fans) accept he will make some mistakes at times. I would make Kennedy McMahon's deputy for right back.

There are issues elsewhere of course: up front I'm not sure where the goals will come from.

Wasn't at Brentford, but watched the game back.I thought when we had the ball we actually passed the ball quite well from the back..even though we were being closed down.It was the final third it seemed to me where we couldn't knit anything together...we kept losing the ball in midfield.and I agree Forshaw and Mcaleny's runs with the ball were what we couldn't cope with, and no denying we gave away sloppy goals...but it's early days in DW's reign,we're still adapting.Brentford played well closed us down, made it difficult...not every team is going to be as mobile or as good as them.
Westlake is getting some stick,i think i must be the only one who would like to see him keep his place, but he passed the ball quite well...I don't think he gave it away to be fair.Yes he was partly to blame for spilling the ball out to Forshaw in a mix up which resulted in Grigg scoring, and I can only remember him getting forward a couple of times to no real effect.
Against County he played well..got the assist for the goal, set up the chances for Brandy and Coady, won the free kick for Maguire's header and also Taylor nearly scored from Westlake's cross/shot late on.
Yeah he was at fault for Burton's winner, but I think he's worth a bit more time for what he showed against County.
Anyway,I doubt McMahon is fit enough for 90 mins having been out injured.

What a difference two years makes.

That was the last time Jordan Slew scored a league goal. Poor bugger.

Funny how Brentford have managed to keep Clayton Donaldson all this time without ripping somebodies arm off when they get a six figure sum waved under their conk.
