Eddie Jones coined the phrase "starters and finishers" whilst in charge of the English national team.

Later, the South Africans adopted an unusual approach of having 7 forwards and only 1 back on their bench...
... including, what was widely regarded as the 3 best front row forwards in World Rugby.
In many a game the momentum turned as the South Africans "sent in the Bomb Squad" on a demolition job.

The South Africans won back-to-back World Cups following this strategy.

Watching Wilder empty his bench with 25 mins to go reminded me of this.
What must a tiring opposition think seeing Callum O'Hare, Tom Davies, Andre Brooks Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, Rhian Brewster etc. on the touchline, fresh and raring to go.

There will be calls for various players to start at Wembley, particularly O'Hare.
But perhaps right now, he's our best "finisher," the leader of the Blades Bomb Squad...

Its really effective and I think your right.

My only counter though is it works really well at 1-0 up.

Would it be the same if it was 0-0 or we were losing.

O hare for me has been a bit under appreciated this season but his awareness and workmate are exceptional! Just no idea who he would start instead of 🤣

Much as I’m a fan of O’Hare, and so would in theory love him to start, I couldn’t agree more on him in particular. If we’re behind or the game is in the balance, he brings a spark. If we’re ahead, his work rate means we won’t sit back and let them play. Plus he’ll happily keep the ball or up the tempo, whichever is necessary. He’s been a gem of a player regardless whether he starts or not.

Excellent post and reference.

This is exactly what kills off any chance for promoted sides in the Premier league, but in the Championship it's a huge advantage for us.

When there were people questionning earlier in the season why certain players were not starting and only getting 30-45 mins or others coming off at 60 mins, I banged on about how its a squad game with indeed "starters and finishers".

The squad has been used very well during the season, those complaining about Brooks not getting enough game time should also realise that certain games suit certain players. At times, we've had some bad luck with injuries to Blaster and Souttar, we've then also been down to bare bones in some positions, so its not always possible every game, but the intent to keep players fresh and bring on strength from the Bench has been there

It seems now that its almost time for the lads to get away on holiday and the games are being played in warmer weather, lighter nights, we're getting everyone back fit.

Since Bomb Squad has already been used, i propose the use of something a little closer to home for our new owners and their Marvel connections. The latest film is "Thunderbolts", a group of 5 anti-heroes...

They were in our village this week to blow up some WW2 Home Guard phosphorus grenades that someone dug up in their garden!

You missed the * from Thunderbolts*, which could be very fitting if we manage to overcome the Playoff monkey on our backs.

Love it.
It does send some serious excitement into the stands seeing 3 gung-ho subs all come onto the pitch at the same side, and I'm a suckered for a nickname. BSB it is.

It has worked well for us in games when we are ahead and the opposition are pushing forward trying to get back in the game. However, when we are behind / concede the first goal - we are not great at breaking teams down & have struggled. Eg….Oxford, Millwall, Plymouth.

Much as I am excited about our strong team squad…. I am concerned about how we will set up to play Sunderland - who will be more than happy to concede 70% possession and try & hit us on the break. We really do need the first goal in the Final to allow us to maximise the effect of our strong bench.

We need to have certain players in mind for a good 30-60 minute effort, because extra time is a very strong possibility

Seriki, Davies, Brereton, O'Hare, Brewster, JRS and Brooks would all be in my mind for this

We have excellent options and our sub selection could be crucial in the outcome

A lot of thought needs to go into it

To be honest, any fucking goal in the final would be amazing. In fact a shot on target would be cause for celebration
:D
