Shane Lowry - End of Season Loan

United have made a second loan signing to bolster the defence with the arrival of Aston Villa's Shane Lowry for the rest of the season.

The 21 year old Australian born central defender joined the Premiership outfit in 2007 and has still to make a senior first-team league appearance, but he has played 24 times on loan at Plymouth and Leeds.

With both Chris Morgan and Nyron Nosworthy out injured Micky Adams has limited specialist resources to call on but he insists that Lowry can do the job:

"He is young, enthusiastic, fits the profile we are looking for and I have watched him recently in Villa's reserves.

"He had a good loan spell at Leeds United last season so coming to a club like ours won't faze him."

Lowry follows West Brom's Joe Mattock into the club on the same day as Adams makes his first moves to freshen up his side and both are available for the visit to Coventry City on Saturday.

Like Mattock, Lowry has no recall clause in his loan deal so the Blades boss can work with the pair for the rest of the campaign without fear of them returning to their parent clubs.

Although he represented the Republic of Ireland at U17 and U21 level through his Irish parentage, Lowry has since decided instead to make himself available for Australia and has been selected in the full senior International squad.

He will join up with the Blades squad for the first time on Friday.

Is that 12 or 13 now? Defenders we've got, not threads about Shane Lowry.

I made it 14 on a different thread the other day. Surely some of the loanees will have to go back if that's possible?
We can only play 5 at once anyway and the drain on the wage bill is enormous. Personally I'd get try to offload Calve, Ertl and Nosworthy.
That would still leave us 8 defenders who aren't long-term injuries.

Defenders:- Calve, Parrino, France, Lowton, Bartley, Ertl, Nosworthy, Morgan, Taylor, Jordan, Kozluk, Conneely + Mattock + Lowry (14 defenders!)

Dont know much about him but we do need a centre half. I had hoped we might have gone out and made a permanent signing but needs must I suppose

If Lowton is fit soon we could end up with one of the youngest back fours in the football league

Lowton Bartley Lowry Mattock

Not sure if thats necessarily a good thing !!

I'd expect another one in, preferably one with a bit of experience.

Two youngsters forming a centre-half partnership doesn't fill me with confidence.

Good News.

I like the policy of bringing in young lads with international pedigree, I think we're starting to see Micky's stamp on things at the club!

No, but Stephen Jordan and Jean Calve were greeted with similarly universal noises of approval and plaudits for the new manager. Maybe we could wait until they play and make up our minds then?

I wonder if these two would even have been on Gary Speed's radar?

One we'll never know, they may have been scouted by the club, but Micky went out to get them so fair play to him

True Raul, but its an initial reaction rather than an informed appraisal.

I'm merely praising the idea of bringing in young lads with a pedigree of playing for at international level for their age group. Doesn't mean that they'll be world beaters, but its a good place to start.

Why would you get rid of Ertl ? He has played OK when filling in at centre half ,better than bartley in the last 2 games and can back up midfield too.

Agreed Sitwell. I've been very impressed with the Turtle these past few matches, comes in very handy and one of the few on permanent contracts.

Done well at Centre halve, but he's not a centre halve (yet).

Mind you he's not a midfielder thats for sure so should never, NEVER play in midfield for the Blades again

Not too keen on Ertl myself either. I accept he tries hard but I dont think he's good enough in midfield or as a regular centre half.

I thought he was awful against Burnley, but a bit better against Villa. Trouble is we cant get a consist game where both play well from any centre half pairing, hence the 3 goals a game ratio being conceded.

Just tell me when I can boo, ok? :)

Nike:D

On another note - did you catch the Women's 20/20? We won on both counts...
