Hi Guys!

I need you help with something.

I'm trying to track down a list of every player who has won Sheffield United's Player of the Year Award and when they were first introduced.

These awards are usually given by the official supporters club at the end of the season.

Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

I would like to create a page similar to this one I did for Chelsea FC...

Playerv of vthe Year

You can find them up to 1999 in the Clarebrough/Kirkham book. Alan Hodgkinson was the first winner in 1966/67.

Try here.

Google Phil Jagielka. Look at the bottom of his Wikipedia entry. There is a link to the player who won the Player Of The Year award before and after him. Follow the trail back to the start. Note how many of them are or were Tottenham players.

Are you saying she's brought pleasure to thousands of Blades Beeb?

02-03 Paddy Kenny

Worst decision of the lot (and that's saying something, as Monty has won it). Never mind player of the year for United, Brown was the best player in the Division.

Actually, my memory goes back to 1981-2, and almost every other choice looks "right" or defensible. Not surprising - the wisdom of crowds and all that.

07-08 James Beattie

What a joke -an uninterested, lazy, apathetic and individual player. Yes he scored a lot of goals, but the team really suffered (copyright Ollesandro)

Trusson winning it in 81-82 was a bit of a surprise given Edwards' 36 goals that season. It's also a bit strange that Deane only won it once between 88-93 when he was easily United's best player in that period (cf Jagielka 04-07)

I agree about Trusson, though I dodn't see enough games that year to really judge. I vaguely recall from the championship book produced by the Star that Trusson was named MotM most times by Tony Pritchett.

As for Deane, taking each year in turn:

88-89 Tony Agana - both got 30 goals, Agana probably regarded as the more "skilful" player at that time, and I also think was more popular. A defensible pick.
89-90 Simon Tracey - Deane was the best outfield player in my eyes but Tracey was excellent and ever present - again, I see why you would vote for him.
90-91 Brian Deane - no contest
92-92 Simon Tracey - Deane of course missed quite a few games due to glandular fever, although Tracey missed 9 or 10 I think. A lot of players made good contributions but didn't play much or missed games due to injury (Gayle, Hodges, Rees). An odd year. I'm not sure anyone stands out...
92-93 Paul Beesley - I would have gone for Deane here, although he went missing in United's biggest post war game...

I think the reason Lord Brown didn't win it in 02/03 was because he'd won it in 01/02 and his excellence had become somewhat taken for granted to a certain extent. Paddy was young and scampered around like a new born fawn whilst throwing himself at everything that came anywhere near him and being somewhat stereotypically "Goalkeeper Mad" became easily identifiable as a "new" hero.

Ten years ago next season....bloody hell.

A fair point, raul. Perhaps if someone else had won in 2001-2 Brown would have won by a mile.

Interesting though not surprising that only one striker has won it in recent years (and he flattered).

And it seemed to take us about 15 years to replace Cockerill.

Its an insult that anyone won last season really.

Didn't know him back then, but he should have definately won an MBE for services to refreshment in 05/06.

02/03 was another lost season of refreshment!

I think 02/03 and 05/06 were the best seasons i've had following the Blades, following them up and down the country, plenty of spare cash, and drinking like a fish.

Interesting you say that. We finished higher that season than any other in my lifetime.
