Was wondering what the thoughts of others are on the team that Blackwell has assembled this year and his record during his time here was wondering if a similar situation is happening here to that at Leeds.
Im not sure but at Leeds Blackwell took over a team built mainly by Peter Reid, He took this club to the play-offs, lost and then started to re-build having had a fire sale. Brought in players from bargain basement/loans and we all know what happened.
Now take United, For all his faults, and there were many, Robson produced a team from the relegation one added a few players and produced a good team on paper but just couldn’t perform, Blackwell took over, turned them around from a side not knowing what they should be doing, how to play and made them into a side that nearly sneaked into the playoffs. With the basis of the same side that ended that year, took us into the playoffs. However this year having had to reduce the playing staff levels, wages etc. Which is a different discussion, Only brought in one 1st team acquisition Evans (eggs in one basket) as I see it, I know Bunn was brought in on loan as 1st choice keeper but I am talking about permanent signings, and filled the rest with squad players/ loanees.
Now with the quality of players he has had to bring in, and the always comment that its quality not quantity that he is looking for. Who is it that we have scouting these players that we have brought in I don’t see what they bring in terms of quality.
Don’t want to go into individual players, will leave that for the moment, but was wondering what others thoughts are? Mine is that Blackwell is only really a coach, who can get the best out of what he has on the training field, but the need is really for a manager/director of football identify the quality we need on the budget constraints that Utd have to work, then pass these players on to Blackwell and his staff, to get the best out of them in training and possible match days if it was the Director of Football approach. Is this a route that we may need to take, if we are not going to actually let Blackwell go as I dont think McCabe will.
