i heard him say that last seasons tactics worked well and we'll be stcking to them this season....i don't think i can stand to sit and watch such boring drivel week in week out again, last seasons excuse for football was bloody aweful

Which part of last seasons tactics... I don't mind our away tactics as it often gets results. But home... I don't remember us playing well very often.

conmpletely agree, with the signings he's been looking to make I was hopeful this indicated a change in tactics and that he was looking to play with width and better ball retention, despite finishing third I don't think I've enjoyed a season less than last season, the thought of watching that drivel again fills me with dread

Welcome to the forum fatpat! :)

At times last season we were poor and looked poor, but compared to some of the stuff we've had over the years it wasn't bad by any stretch of the imagination.

What he said was that we don't want to deviate too much away from what works in the championship, with the win ratio he has as manager of the blades, it's hard to disagree.
I think with the players he's buying, we will play the wings more, and with the added pace we may see a reduction of the crosses as soon as we get in the opposition half :)

Plus he's hardly going to go into the press telling everyone the ins and outs of how we intend to play for the season.

fair enough foxy, however without being all negative, cuz I'm not generally, I think he must realise that last years tactics although effective away from home, left us very one dimensional, too many times we didn't have the nous to break teams down or to change our shape. have to say we have had much worse teams in the past without a doubt but I feel we squandered a huge opportunity last year, teams like burnley and swansea showed its possible to play good football and be succesful, not saying chuck the baby out with the bath water but we must evolve and play to the strengths of the players we have/are getting
ps
thanks for the welcome guys

The think the best game I witnessed, having had my memory jogged by the Nicky Weaver thread yesterday, was probably Charlton away.

Take away the scoreline and we were still left with a very positive performance with a lot of men pushing forward at once. It's probably not a coincidence that Brian Howard and Squinny also played well that game when perhaps, their influence hasn't been as evident for the rest of the season.

As much as I like Halford as a player (and, let's face it, as an individual when he keeps his gob shut and has his shirt off), playing with two out and out wingers would very much change our style of player, especially with the fullbacks we've got if we keep the two Kyles.

I think a lot of the problem last season wasn't all down to the game being played, but the expectations of a lot of fans going into those games, especially against Wednesday and Donny. They aren't the kinds of games where, despite the result, you can appreciate a good game of football. They are the kinds of games that people desperately need us to win.

I think last season might be remembered more fondly were it not for those games.

Have to agree with Linz. Although Halford was useful he will never make it in the premiership as a forward and does not have the instincts (dribble mania) of a winger. When Cots is on form the defence is in a panic - Halford never offered that type of threat.

hi pat, nice to know it just wasn't me that didn't enjoy last season..i spent more time watching the clock than the match :hello:

Welcome Fatpat

I thought parts of last season was good ie Preston at home and I think if we play with two out and out wingers then we should be more of an attacking threat.

Ie Henderson might be in the box trying to head the ball in rather than having his back to goal all of the time

If we keep the two Kyles I think this can also improve our attacking threat.

We just need someone to partner Monty in the middle.

hi guys
thanks for the warm welcome, seems a nice place to be, glad to have a discussion that doesn't quickly descend into name calling!
My feeling is that Blackie did try to be more expansive for a short spell however unfortunately despite playing some good stuff we lost at home to wolves, burnley and reading consecutively, unsurprisingly he felt he had to tighten things up but this led us to become hard to score against but harder to watch.have to say linz wendy and donny were just about the worst examples of how poor we'd become, hopefully Blackie has learned some lessons and we become easier on the eye.
