The Wrexham obsession is bizarre
I was talking to a Marketing exec in the states in February. We were talking about Wrexham and their approach to marketing them over there. He was saying part of the strategy, he believes, is to also heavily market the league they are in, to generate interest not just in the club, but on the league, which in turns drives more interest in the club. This has been a struggle because Wrexham keep getting promoted, so there is no point promoting the league too heavily, as they won't be in it once the marketing starts to have an ROI effect. He thinks if Wrexham get to the championship and settle there for a few years, the profile of the league will really take off in the US and you'll start to see a lot more of the above for Championship games. The promotion/relegation with the Prem and Championship is something that could really take off in the US, he reckoned. He was a pretty smart cookie, working on NASCAR marketing as an exec, so knows the US sports market.

Think the championship would appeal to a lot of Americans just as a different, more raw, less sanitised league but still with plenty of quality and good players. Plus it’s unpredictable.

.....And has that Prem continuity. If your team does well, you'll see it in the prem. if it does shit, it'll be in the champ. He was saying they don't really have anything mainstream in the US that has any kind of 'you do well, you progress, you do badly, you regress'. He said the nearest was NASCAR, which I can see, though regression is fairly rare

I think it's depends if you've watched "Welcome to Wrexham".

Previously wasn't bothered about Wrexham but must admit the series turns a football club into a reality show
where you feel that you personally know the players and their families. Really brings out that emotional side of football.
The editing is very clever with the owners being professional actors they do a great job at ramping up the excitement and jeopardy.

Also it's a David and Goliath type story....a romantic experiment...if an owner can help club rise through the divisions.

Promotion and relegation is an alien concept to Americans.....so there's a massive novelty there regards how matches can be played to such massive stakes and how football has such a strong effect on a community.....Americans are realising football is more than just a sport.

.Americans are realising football is more than just a sport.
…which they can relate to, with their high school and college (American) football. They just didn’t really appreciate that soccer was like that here. They thought it was like their NFL. Big business, not communities
