From The Star:

"SHEFFIELD United are interested in signing former Leeds defender Ben Parker.

Parker, whose contract at Elland Road was recently terminated by mutual consent, is understood to feature on Danny Wilson’s wanted list after severing his ties with the Championship club.

Wilson, the United manager, has identified reinforcements at left-back as one of his top priorities this summer following Andy Taylor’s departure last week.

With Haiti international Lecsinel Jean-Francois set to miss the start of next season with a serious ligament injury, Marcus Williams could be the only experienced option at United’s disposal when the 2012/13 season begins in August.

“Ben wants to get his future sorted out as quickly as possible,” a source close to the 24-year-old confirmed last night.

“He’s looking forward to a fresh start and is raring to go.

“He’s been working hard and wants to get back to doing what he does best which is playing football.

“Ben is a good player and there are some good options out there.”

United are understood to be in pole position to secure Parker’s services should Wilson decide to pursue his interest.

However, they would face competition from neighbours Rotherham and League One rivals Scunthorpe, who have also been monitoring Parker since his departure from West Yorkshire in April.

Despite seeing a succession of fitness problems hamper his progress, Parker remains highly regarded in football circles.

“He’s had bad luck but he’s not going to make it with us and it’s not fair to him,” Ken Bates, the Leeds chairman, said after Parker’s exit was announced.

“He’s a lovely fellow and we wish him all the best. Although he is finished with us, he is going to carry on training to make sure he is fit for next season.”

Parker, who was Leeds’ longest serving player, made five appearances for Carlisle during a loan spell in Cumbria last term.

He has also represented Bradford City, Darlington and England at youth level."

And what about cover for lowton ? we have 2 left backs already that are unlikely to go anywhere so why buy another

Given that he's spent much of the last two years out injured, he certainly fits the bill.

"I was running with the physios and then breaking down, building myself up and then breaking down over and over again,” Parker said. “It got to a point where I was considering not playing again.”

The guy really needs to work on his marketing pitch.

DW certainly has an eye for injury prone players...haha
he's highly rated amongst the Leeds fans i know.....has been unlucky with injuries.
Andy Taylor gone, lecsy out for start of season leaves us with Lowton as the only option (if he stays)

buy buy buy !

According to Leeds fans he's a)Shit b)Injury prone.

which Leeds fans are these?? i know some die hard Leeds fans and they rated him as one of the best players within the squad, always gave them 100%
the fans comments on the YEP would also back this up.
let's be realistic, we are a div 3 team and cannot attract the quality of player we'd all like to see at SUFC..... yet!

We'd be better off searching the Conference for talented, hungry, young players with potential. There must be some unpolished gems down there.

A friend of mine spent some time reporting on the Conference and Conference South. His view is that some of the players at that level are probably just as good, if not better, technically than Championship/League One/League Two but often lack the desire to train every day or have disciplinary issues. It's a shame but the paucity of players making the jump up would suggest it's true. Apart from Paul Parry and Michael Kightly I can't think of anyone coming up from non-league and being a success.

Didn't Tony Agana begin his career in non-league?

We also signed Paul Rogers from Sutton United I seem to recall. He did ok.

United have had a scouting system ever since the club was founded in 1889 and I'm sure they have always been keen to find young players and bring them through. For instance, Graham Shaw was introduced to the first team in 1952 at the age of 17 after being signed as a junior (I don't think clubs could sign them much younger in those days since the development of young players was through the schools' system).

In the early 50s, in addition to the first team, the Blades had a strong reserve side in the Central League, plus an 'A' team in (I think) the Hatchard League, all three sides playing on a Saturday. Oaks Fold was also regarded as a 'feeder' club.

It may come as a surprise to the young whippersnappers on this site, but there was life before the Academy!

I don't doubt that there was life before the Academy broomhillblade but there wasn't anything like the hoovering up of youngsters you see now.

I imagine that if you went back 20 years, the kids in Manchester United's youth system would have come from a 90 minute radius. Now, they're just as likely to be Dutch as Mancunian so the chances of a talented young player going unspotted and continuing to play non-league football isn't that high.

United's academy is guilty of the same thing, albeit to a lesser extent: Sam Wedgbury (Worcester) and Matty Harriot (Luton) both came a long way to get to Bramall Lane.

Chris Smalling??

.

It's a miracle, then, that they managed to find George Best!

Not so BB Mat Busby went far afield to sign the ill fated "Busby Babes" including Duncan Ewards, one of the best if not the best player I have ever seen. I believe that he came from Dudley.
