¡No Pasarán!
Just back from watching PNE vs Colchester today. I don't know about anyone else, but when I watch United I don't pay much attention to the opponents unless they're particularly good, so this was quite interesting in terms of gauging our current position, especially after seeing Walsall play so well on TV on Monday.
From a relegation fight point of view, Colchester are real candidates on this showing. I fully expect them to finish beneath us. The 1-1 scoreline was a fabulous result for them - they should have taken a real spanking today but somehow grabbed a point from nowhere with a great strike right out the blue.
Watching teams like Colchester you realise just how ridiculous it is for United to be in our current position. They have very few resources and a collection of players who very limited. If they showed the attitude we see in our players then they'd be getting utterly spanked every week.
From a promotion point of view (hoho!), PNE look definite playoff material. They have a quality keeper in Rudd, a great target man in Davies, as well as the slightly flakey talent of Gallagher on the wing. The remainder of the team are solid citizens, and play a decent, if not elaborate, brand of football. They're a huge improvement on Westley's ragamuffins of last season.
So, watching others play is both reassuring in terms of the relegation fight (it's so clearly in our hands), and sobering in terms of how far teams like PNE and Walsall are ahead of us now.
