My Google Maps Timeline actually makes a difficult day look quite smooth. Well, it WASN'T smooth, and it WAS difficult, but overall today was brilliant and actually rather enjoyable.

Brief synopsis:

*Miss bus, walk to M25 j14...

*90 minute wait spooked by low flying aircraft as well as bloke at window of nearby Travelodge with telescope

*Lift to M25/M1 intersection

*Lift to Toddington Services

*Avoid stag party; netball team avoid me

*Lift to Trowell Services; slowest traffic known to man

*Lift to Woodall Services as match starts; United go goal up

*Half-hour wait followed by lift all way to Bramall Lane as second-half begins

*Find only open turnstile with United 2-0 ahead; there are isolated boos coming from the Kop (winning 2-0 remember)

*Sleepy steward has peace shattered by being asked if he wishes to search my rucksack; he declines

*23 minutes left on clock as I head to seat

*Crewe score as I sit down

*Within 15 minutes Crewe have it back to 2-2; more boos plus semi-mass exodus

*Finger of blame pointed firmly in direction of Greenwich Blade; Adkins off hook

*United go 3-2 up before doing their very best to let Crewe score again

*Final whistle; nobody hears it but linesmen hare across pitch towards ref so we must have won

*Rutland Beer Garden; Chaingate reminisces

Dedication over and above the call of duty....it must have been all worth it when the cream that Crewe have to offer were duly served notice by the mighty Blades.

Did you have to pay? I remember in the mid 80s when I had no cash at all I used to go down for the last 20 minutes and go in for nothing to get my fix, but I'm not sure if that still occurs?

If you've hitched up and then paid full price to go in for the last 23 minutes then even more credit to you.

As an aside, as someone who used to hitch a bit, has the advent of Imodium (one of the greatest inventions known in Christendom and up there with the wheel, penicillin and Thornbridge Jaipur in my book) assisted the modern hitchhiker?

I have a season ticket anyway so I just beeped my card and in I went.

As for Imodium, absolutely right; I usually have an emergency capsule or two about my person. The equivalent of pouring quick-setting cement into your stomach, it guarantees no movement down there for 48 hours.

Great effort GB,although it sounds like you nearly jinxed us by arriving on 23 minutes to go,and throw away a 2 goal lead...I think I would have given up at Toddington once the Netball team gave you the swerve, and gone home.

used to do that in the 70s sometimes at concerts in the City Hall, wander in and see the last 20 minutes for nowt (pubs shut at half 10 in those days)

One very much negates the benefit of the other

Ying and yang I agree.

Just imagine the profits Wards would have made if Imodium had existed back then? It took me years of practice to 'manage' my love for Sheffield Best bitter, an apprenticeship that would have been eased by life changing drugs, such as Imodium.

Mind you, unlike many of today's footballers I earnt my Wards spurs through experience, hard graft and no easy solutions. The wonder drug solution wouldn't have made me half the man I am today, a lesson about getting things too easy that some of our footballing starlets could well learn...
