I'm hopeless with names and I wondered if someone would jog my memory of some of the dodgy characters who've resided in the corridors of power at BDTBL over the years. Where necessary couch any references to alleged dodgyness in terms not likely to gain the attention of Darren's colleagues. Thanks.

I wonder how many of our contributors are named? I know of at least one.

Excellent book, however you do end up with your head in your hands thinking what did one club do to deserve such an inglorious line up of directors down the years. My abiding feelings on finishing it were we are not a great deal further forward.

Charles Green. Maybe the worst of the lot.

i think paul woolhouse has to be up there? i was working in an office above his solicitors at the time whilst they were raided. wasn't he also a fugitive for a while and on crimewatch? i don't think he actuallt defrauded us but purchased shares and didn't pay for them. is he still on the run btw?

Some of the more interesting characters:

Reg Breeley during his latter days in office leading to.........

A short stint with his brother Len while they communicated through lawyers if memory serveso_O

The aforementioned Paul Woolhouse whose heart ruled his head and went from being respected local businessman with a nice house in the Mayfield valley, a Bentley parked outside and plenty in the bank to a man on the run. And still is!!

Carlo Columbotti!! Where did he come from, where did he go?

Stephen Hinchcliffe! Spent some time at Her Majesty's pleasure!

Yep, we've had some good 'uns:)

Didn't realise hed married 'Our Avaline', nice shiner though, hope the stag at the doo Im going to tomorrow doesnt end up looking like that at his wedding or Im going to be in trouble

Mike MacDonald,

Built the 4th Stand and then spent every week saying the fans were not as good as his beloved city fans.

Oh and told the Sheffield Star we could get Kinkladzi on a lease deal from his company.

A few Quotes from the big man:

“I am not interested in a title. I will come back as a tea lady if necessary. I have taken a back seat for the last 12 months because that was what the fans wanted, but sometimes it can be a case of better the devil you know.” (April 1999)

“I want to hand this club to the fans.” (July 1999)

“I don’t care much about the fans.” (September 1999)

If he's still around, I hope he chokes on his blue moon pie this Sunday.

Mike McDonald - a legend in his own lunchtime. Vies with Lee Strafford for the title of Sheffield's best empty space.

but remember Lord McCabe is the best we've had !

Haha

Lets Look at what McCabe has brought to United:

Filled in two corners of the ground, built an office block and a hotel.

Appointed Neil Warnock

Gained then threw away Premier League football

Sued another football club for breaching regulations/being better than us in the last part of the season.

Borrowed £15 million from a bank against the money from West Ham

Appointed Bryan Robson and spent all the parachute money on over the hill average football players.

Sold the best player at a crucial point in a season

Sold a future world class right back for £3.5million

Bought a Chinese football club then spent £1million a year of United's money on it.

Oversaw relegation to League One.

Dragged Sheffield United's name through the mud on various occasions.

and extra seating in the top corner - office block could of brought in extra income if the whole economic climate hadnt fucked up

Appointed Neil Warnock
Good appointment!

Gained then threw away Premier League football
cant complain about him gaining prem status and we went down by 1 goal, hardly abject failure

Sued another football club for breaching regulations/being better than us in the last part of the season.
He was right and proved right, they cheated

Borrowed £15 million from a bank against the money from West Ham
and how much have we borrowed off him?

Appointed Bryan Robson and spent all the parachute money on over the hill average football players.
Ill give you that one, he should be shot!

Sold the best player at a crucial point in a season
agreed, bad decision

Sold a future world class right back for £3.5million
who had played what 3-5 games? he could of ended up being shit or breaking his leg and ending his career

Bought a Chinese football club then spent £1million a year of United's money on it.
Gamble that didnt pay off but I think it could of worked and as such wasnt a bad gamble

Oversaw relegation to League One.
He could of walked and let us go into admin?

Dragged Sheffield United's name through the mud on various occasions.
How?

The post wasn't all meant to be a dig at him, he has done some good things.

These were mainly in the early 2000's.

10 points from relegation and blew it.
9 Goals away from home all season.
Ahmed Fathi, David Carney & Luton Shelton.

The £15 million was spent on the Hotel, which was not needed, did you know it now competes against the club for functions, events etc? The Club actually built competition next door!

The Walker fee is nonsense, every other club in the country seems to rip premier league clubs off for their youngsters (see Southampton), United bend over every time.

The Chendgu venture was an abject failure, a pointless purchase and an unnecessary burden.

He loses a lot of money if we go into Admin, so that will never happen.

I'll rephase the last one, helped to make Sheffield United look less than magic on a few occasions.

Right or Wrong, we never came out of the Tevez affair looking brilliant.

Trying to sell the club to undercover journalists working for Panorama.

Ched Evans (he may be innocent after all, but the club has not done well on the PR front from this)

He's done as many decent things as he has stupid things, like you said he didn't expect the economy to tank.

Thing is the players you've mentioned were Warnocks signings not McKabes, I think he did right to employ warnock but they were his failures.

I seem to remember that we have the option to buy back the hotel for £1, not sure thats a fact but it was definately talked about at the time.

£3.5 mil is alot for an unproven player whod played a handfull of games, I dont think its an unfair price, how do you feel about the reported £7mil for Naughton?

As for Chengdu, if we still owned these foreign clubs now they're bringing in the youth development rules we'd have a big advantage over most other clubs at our level as we would be able to sign under 16 players from all areas of the world rather than within a 10 mile radius.

I couldnt give 2 hoots how we look regarding Tevez, we were never a popular club with the press before that saga anyway and I agree with him we were robbed.

Trying to sell the club to journalists, well hed of been stupid to not hear them out as it appeared like a genuine offer but he didnt sell them to them as he has the best interests of the club at heart.

Ched?! dont see how you can blame that on McKabe in the slightest

we should not have relyed on west ham being found guilty and getting their just desserts,we should have done the job on the pitch and then we may still have been there.

as for ched, the club should have realised the possible consequences if it went pear shaped and should have invested in a good replacement
