Town are reported to have made a £440,000 offer for Sheffield United left-back Chris Armstrong, according to a report in one of this morning’s tabloids. The Blues have been looking to sign a new left-sided full-back all summer. Armstrong, 25, was a regular in the Blades side last season and won his first Scotland B international cap. Previously the Newcastle-born defender, who qualifies for Scotland via his grandmother, had represented England’s U20s.

Nicknamed Stretch by Sheffield United fans, Armstrong started his career with Bury before moving to Oldham for £200,000 in 2001. After two years at Boundary Park, the Blades took him to Bramall Lane for £100,000. Armstrong, 5ft 9in tall, spent time on loan at Blackpool in 2005.

A new left-back continues to be one of Jim Magilton’s priorities with Sito leaving the club over the summer, Dan Harding out of favour and Ben Thatcher appearing not to be interested in a move to Portman Road in the wake of his trial.

Whilst I wouldn't be too sad to see him go - I fear he'll be a squad player at best this season - it might leave us short at left back.

Sell him, if we can get about 700k I'd let him go.

Yeah, he's great back-up but I don't see him as first choice and never have. Showed great character to come back from his injury but still, makes too many mistakes positionally for me.

I'd rather keep a dedicated left-sided player myself. I remember years ago when we used to have to endure Paul Beesley covering at left back, and I never want to see those days again.

It's not like he's 37 years old playing out his career, is it? Unless we've got extra cover (which reminds me, the cricket's about to start ......) coming in for definite, I'd rather keep him, especially if fears about Carney prove to be true.

I hope not. Quinn has been one of their better players since moving down here from United..I'd rather not see another one of our ex players impress them. :D

Id keep him.

Solid left back and it isnt often he has a bad game.

Id keep Armstrong. Can play left back and has filled in at CM and left wing so handy addition.

Just been on the radio that Blackwell has dismissed rumours.

Blackwell on SSN last night, admittedly in the pub so it was very badly subtitled, said something along the lines of him staying. Or it could have been an advert for washpowder, it's hard to tell with live subtitles.

Sheffield United left-back Chris Armstrong is a target for Reading. (The Sun)

Reading after him now apparently...

Didn't have one, it was an anonymous email :)

Not found it in any of the rags yet, but imagine it will be.

Found this in a Rag although it cast shadows over your "Anonymous email" :D

Sheffield United defender Chris Armstrong is set to join Championship rivals Reading for £750,000. (Daily Mirror)

Although i accept that it is the Mirror

I like Armstrong, but as said by others, he is only a squad player, and thats all he will be.

I wouldn't mind keeping him, however on the other hand I wouldn't begrudge him a move.

I've never been a fan at all

for 750k id be happy to see him go for that

Id be happy to sell him for the right price & also to someone who ISNT going to rival us for pronmotion.

TBH I don't want to see him go at all. Perfect replacement for Naysmith plus he's good going forward. Who would we pick at LB if Naysmith was injured.

Not sure if he's ever played there properly, but SJH is two-footed and would probably fill in... seeing as we have ample cover on the other side.

I think Armstrongs attitude is absolutely spot on and would be sorry to see him go

However, after all he's been through with his injury and the decision to keep playing and not take the insurance money, who would begrudge him a move to any club that can guarantee him a shirt every week. It would seem that we can't give him that shirt. If he goes good luck to the lad.

Thing is that's disrupting the back 4, if Sunny jim keeps playing well at RB he should stay as RB. There is absolutely nothing wrong with Armstrong at all. And the only reason that he isn't no.1 in that position is cos Naysmiths sorted himself out after his horrific performances under the drunken one.

Well Del has proven before ha can play at RB. So I don't see the problem.

If not, Kyle Naughton

But then aren't we only wekening the squad? Long season, lots of games, you need a good squad in this division too.

TBH I wouldn't sell anyone until January. Except maybe Hendrie, he can get run over as far as I'm concerned.

Nothing happening... at least not yet anyway...

Skysports.com said:
Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell has rubbished rumours suggesting Chris Armstrong could leave Bramall Lane.

The left-back has been linked with a move to Championship rivals Reading, but Blackwell insists he does not intend to part with any members of his squad.

"I don't want to lose any of the players I have at the moment, but that doesn't stop other clubs from being interested in them," he told skysports.com.

"We've heard nothing from Reading and at the moment it is purely paper talk."
