Just to pull out a player at random, and I’m not especially down in the weeds in his situation, but I saw Luke Shaw putting out an Instagram post about an injury setback he’d had. You could feel in the words that the only reason he was doing it was because of the battering he knew he’d get from fans. He was doing anything he could to make clear that he’s more gutted than anyone. It’s so easy to go after players for being ‘soft’ and that’s why you have people playing through things, arguably making things worse. There’s no real solution for this but it’s probably just one of those things that needs a bit more consideration sometimes. The pressure on these lads to keep performing, both internally and externally, is so extreme that some of them are constantly playing through injuries. Its a dangerous thing to do as it can cause over compensation in other areas. Whats to say that the ankle problem wasn't an indirect cause of the ACL injury?
I agree with the sentiment of your post about playing through injuries, however, the ankle swelling is probably as a result of the ACL surgery in this caseInteresting that he jokingly comments at one point, "I can actually see my ankle now. I've got an ankle". He was clearly playing through his ankle injury and obviously had swelling for a long time, but with his ACL, his ankle had been having time to recover and lose swelling. So often we assume they're playing at 100% fitness when they are far from it.
I definitely didn’t know knee surgery could cause that. He was out with an ankle injury a few weeks ago thoughI agree with the sentiment of your post about playing through injuries, however, the ankle swelling is probably as a result of the ACL surgery in this case
My ankle was swollen after lesser knee surgery
Yeah, I really felt for him when he was looking out of the window, watching his team-mates kicking a ball about.A great watch, poignant watching him watching the first team train
Doing his rehab with U18 player Theo Howard, who has also done his ACL
Unfortunately part of the life of a footballer
Bit cruel of the Physio when Blaster talks of being back for Sunderland New Years Day, adding...2026!Yeah, I really felt for him when he was looking out of the window, watching his team-mates kicking a ball about.
Let’s hope the medical team look after his legs well & I imagine there’ll be someone looking after his head too. This must a difficult time for the lad & wishing him a full recovery.
I missed that bit.Bit cruel of the Physio when Blaster talks of being back for Sunderland New Years Day, adding...2026!
Bants?
It was near the end, attention may have been waning after 35 minsI missed that bit.
Though I did see Brewster pop in to see who was keeping his treatment table warm.![]()
I think it's more to do with his knee and leg being very swollen.Interesting that he jokingly comments at one point, "I can actually see my ankle now. I've got an ankle". Good lad. All the best Blaster, looking forward to watching your recovery, and thanks for allowing the club to document your recovery for us. My lad is studying to be a sports physio and wants to work in professional sport, so this is great for him.
The whole of his lower leg would have been more swollen after the op - I take him to mean that he could see his ankle again now that the swelling was subsiding.Interesting that he jokingly comments at one point, "I can actually see my ankle now. It took me a long time, 2 years after physio said I could play football again to actually get back to it.I had a high grade ACL tear in Oct 2023 and FINALLY last week I was formally discharged.
It’s such a long and frustrating road of recovery and my god the hardest part is getting over the fear of not trusting your knee to do its job
All the best to Oliver!!
