Interesting that he jokingly comments at one point, "I can actually see my ankle now. I've got an ankle". He was clearly playing through his ankle injury and obviously had swelling for a long time, but with his ACL, his ankle had been having time to recover and lose swelling. So often we assume they're playing at 100% fitness when they are far from it.

Good lad. All the best Blaster, looking forward to watching your recovery, and thanks for allowing the club to document your recovery for us. My lad is studying to be a sports physio and wants to work in professional sport, so this is great for him.

Great idea I think after a few mixed comments on the clubs Instagram post, will help Blaster keep involved with the first team as he recovers, we have all heard how being out with long term injury makes a player feel outside the team so this can only help a young lad recovery.

The pressure on these lads to keep performing, both internally and externally, is so extreme that some of them are constantly playing through injuries. Its a dangerous thing to do as it can cause over compensation in other areas. Whats to say that the ankle problem wasn't an indirect cause of the ACL injury?

Just to pull out a player at random, and I’m not especially down in the weeds in his situation, but I saw Luke Shaw putting out an Instagram post about an injury setback he’d had. You could feel in the words that the only reason he was doing it was because of the battering he knew he’d get from fans. He was doing anything he could to make clear that he’s more gutted than anyone. It’s so easy to go after players for being ‘soft’ and that’s why you have people playing through things, arguably making things worse. There’s no real solution for this but it’s probably just one of those things that needs a bit more consideration sometimes.

I agree with the sentiment of your post about playing through injuries, however, the ankle swelling is probably as a result of the ACL surgery in this case
My ankle was swollen after lesser knee surgery

I definitely didn’t know knee surgery could cause that. He was out with an ankle injury a few weeks ago though 👍🏻

Sad to watch such a young lad go through a bad injury and a long recovery but unfortunately it’s part of being a top sportsman that these things happen to the unlucky few. I’ve no doubt he will come back stronger and have a long premiership career because he’s such a top talent.

Fair play to him agreeing to the videos and hats off to the media team for the video and future episodes as the videos close to players like this regardless of what they are doing are better than the training videos where you don’t really see much imo. Really gives fans an insight into the workings of Shirecliffe while also getting everyone closer to Arblaster. Don’t know how many episodes there will be but I guarantee we will all think we are mates with Oli by the end of it and cheering on everything he does that little bit extra because we will feel that close to him. Brilliant to all involved 👏

A great watch, poignant watching him watching the first team train
Doing his rehab with U18 player Theo Howard, who has also done his ACL
Unfortunately part of the life of a footballer
Yeah, I really felt for him when he was looking out of the window, watching his team-mates kicking a ball about.
Let’s hope the medical team look after his legs well & I imagine there’ll be someone looking after his head too. This must a difficult time for the lad & wishing him a full recovery.

Bit cruel of the Physio when Blaster talks of being back for Sunderland New Years Day, adding...2026!
Bants?

Appeared to me that, although one of the physios had United gear on he didn’t seem to know anyone and was the more serious off the rest of the rehab team - hopefully they have a specialist in helping with the minor details of recovery, i ruptured my ACL at 14 in 2011 and although physio with the children’s hospital was good, they had no real clue the level it needed to be at to return to football, probably why it broke down again 2.5 years later

I think it's more to do with his knee and leg being very swollen.
When he's walking later in the vid his right leg looks twice the width of his left.

The whole of his lower leg would have been more swollen after the op - I take him to mean that he could see his ankle again now that the swelling was subsiding.
I honestly don't think clubs risk playing injured players like the old days when they got a cortisone injection and could barely walk when they retired

Finally sat down and watched this first episode. Very interesting for me, since I’ve had surgery on 2 x surgery on ACL ruptures, with varying levels of aftercare. The last one I was signed off physio in 2011.

It looks like the guy Cieran is the senior guy but unfamiliar to the players, even Brewster. So I guess he’s new.

It’s obvious but the physios working within the surgeons guidance is good to see.

Very interesting to see the level and range of movement even two weeks post op, I was still on a machine moving my leg up to 75°. And the physio I was doing even in Switzerland was quite basic but i wasn’t a pro footballer and it was a relatively long time ago.

Blaster is working on the range of movements and also the different supporting muscle groups. Interesting, as others have pointed out that he’s had a lot of swelling around the ankle as the fluid has moved there, which can create further problems for his rehab.

Also the use of ice therapy with the game ready machine and the electrodes, which probably acts like a TENS machine for his quads to get the muscle firing again.

I hope the club keep up these videos as it’ll be good for blaster as well as us fans to see his progress.

Takes me back and I had some very dark times during my rehab that thankfully I had friends around me to deal with.

Not watched it yet. Just watched Tom Davies 82 Shoreham video. He is a switched on nice guy and will be great for Blaster to have around.

I had a high grade ACL tear in Oct 2023 and FINALLY last week I was formally discharged.

It’s such a long and frustrating road of recovery and my god the hardest part is getting over the fear of not trusting your knee to do its job

All the best to Oliver!!
It took me a long time, 2 years after physio said I could play football again to actually get back to it.

One of The things I did at work in Switzerland was organise the 5 aside and 11 aside games of footy. I’d be there every week on crutches with the brace on, then off them, without the fixed brace, then just the flexible brace…

I’d organise games against other companies, I joined this forum and contributed here when Blades Bees dropped off. I wanted to be involved.

When I was building back up to running, despite having extra kilos, I started doing the warm ups with the lads, I’d do what I could…

But I couldn’t go near a tackle and I couldn’t have anyone near me challenging me for the ball.. I’d be there at the end of games hitting balls from the D into empty nets or wide or over. It was horrible as all along I knew that I needed to do the dynamic running and get back into 5 aside or whatever.

I eventually went to Japan and clean slate started playing there around the same time I started triathlon. As I say, 2 years after the physio signed me off. Still over weight but I was playing again. 11’s, 5’s, indoor, grass, 4G… that was 2013. I carried on until 2015 and played a local legends 11 aside game in the hope valley, that was my last 11 aside game. I think I turned out for S2 forum on Sundays a couple of times around the same time and I the think inter United. But I was happy I’d got my head right again.

I hadn’t kicked a ball properly again until I was in Mexico last week when some Argies were playing beach football and thought I’d have a crack. It didn’t end well but my injuries were only to my pride 😂

New training ground mentioned, even as a joke maybe it's a sign it's on the cards. Don't normally bother watching these things but the lads seem in good spirits and Arblaster is a very likeable lad.

Go Blaster 🔥 💥 Can't wait for the lad to return !!

JOC always in the back of my mind 😱 (sorry for the negative comment)
