Get Hammond they (we) said. Morsey, Holmes and now Lenihan and Leonard. Personally i hadn't heard too much about these lads but the Hammond experience shows how not to get caught up in all the hype.
I felt much the same about the return of James Beattie and even thought Sammon would be a good signing so in future i think it's best to see the horse run before backing it.

Take the point but where's the fun in that?

Its what being a fan is about. The illusive draw of potential and the unknown. personally I enjoy thinking about the squad and the team and look forward to seeing new players play in case they turn out to be brilliant!

Fwiw - I don't know much about the players we have bid for. But then I didn't know owt of O'Connell or Moore either.

I Think the signings so far have strengthened the squad immeasurably from last year and we need just one or two more finishing touches

It's pre-season. If we can't get excited about possibly signing players we've never heard of, we might as well give up.

We'd have to pretend to enjoy sports that carry on through the summer. But cricket is shit. Tennis is shit. Cycling is shit. I don't know what a 'lions tour' actually is but I'm not going to find out, because rugby is shit.

I watch the cricket, because that's what summer was invented for. In the good old days we found out about new signings when Tony Pritchett told us in The Star. Same goes for anyone getting sold. There wasn't endless speculation, invented bollocks, people trying to assume the position of most ITK. The rumours section was the bar in the local, but generally people weren't bothered, the attitude was wait and see. What happened on the pitch was the be all and end all, whereas now it's as much about off the pitch as on it. You saw any new kit the first game of the season, or at the squad photo call. It's all much better now though....o_O

Don't forget, 'keep the faith' James Harper our flagship signing of 2009! (And I'm still waiting for Steve Finnieston to fire us to the old first division.)
However I understand where everybody's coming from, last season finished on such a high we're all still revved up and there was nothing this summer to distract our attention. Let's face it if you have half a functioning brain you know Wilder-Knill-Mitchell won't let us down, wherever they buy from.

I will give you a Finnieston, and raise you a Peter Dornan, the next George Best,he was even homesick like Genius George

So what's the alternative? Say they're probably going to be shit?

Peter Dornan is very vague to me I started paying attention about mid 70s did he come after that?

David Bradford was going to be the next T.C..........but wasn't!

but to be fair to Bradford, there hasn't been another TC!

(Got me thinking over who may come close; le Tissier, Gascoign, Hoddle?)

I do think Tony Pritchett missed a trick in the closed season. He could have asked "What's the strangest think you have taken to a football match ?".

Dornan was about that time, there as also the lad Hetherston who was the next big thing, but never quite made it!

I just want a foreigner that's all I ask, A real one.someone with a decent amount of international caps for a nation no one cares about(don't expect World Cup winners) just so someone can bring his national flag (fire tested of course) and stick it at the bottom of the Kop everyweek.

What did happen to our International scouting system!!!!!

Came to us from Linfield along with Steve McKee in November/December 1976. Dornan played one full match plus 2 sub appearances before deciding that professional football isnt for him as he didnt enjoy having to think about football too much. Despite this he joined Swindon Town in 1979 but didnt stay long too

Strangest think I ever took in was who has the biggest schlong and do they brag in the communal bath.

Fundamental difference between then and now mate . Hammond et al were journey men coming to the end of their careers . Leonard et al are either at their prime or the best is yet to come . Add to the permutation the fact that their attitudes are also spot on .

If Wilder does splash the cash , and I've no doubt he will , I'm not in the slightest bit concerned . Wilder spends it exactly as if it was his own :)

Most of United's signings are nowt to get too enthused about so the feeling is usually one of ambivalence

Do you include signings during CW's tenure? If you do I find that very strange. As a Blade himself, CW has undoubtedly been as frustrated as the rest of us by some of our signings over the years. It is his astute judgment of a player together with a refusal to overpay that makes me feel very excited about the club's prospects. This is a new era and desrves a less cynical narrative from the supporters.

Yes
It doesn't mean they are bad signings

But At the same time, I didn't lie awake in bed during last season hoping Wilder would sign Fleck, Carruthers and Hanson etc.

Hence my ambivalent attitude, an attitude that will remain ambivalent as I hope rather than expect Baldock, Evans, Stephens, Stearman and Thomas to rip the Championship a new one

So in essence , unless the signings are players youve heard of , you remain ' ambivalent ' towards them ? Why dont you just tell Wilder hes a cunt as nothing he ever does will get you to set foot in the Lane ever again ?

You can think what you want,

I'm not getting over excited about Nathan Thomas or Enda Stephens or any other of our signings
If they work out well, great
If they don't they don't

They are all gambles having played at lower levels with the exception of Stearman

I was thinking this the other day - when we signed bag of shit sorry Richard Cadette the first we heard was in the star - I don't remember 'rumours' of transfers been a thing back then.

Summers were pretty shit if there was no tournament I remember scouring newspapers for footy news or buying Shoot and Match which had nowt in.

Even if there was a tournament club news seemed to not exist across fag end of May June and July save for fixtures release and teamphoto
