I know we've been working towards this for some time so good news if true:

"The Star understands that United, who yesterday appointed Adam Owen to manager David Weir’s backroom staff, are on course to be granted Category Two status when the results of the Elite Player Performance Plan audits are announced next month."

Am I right that by gaining category two status that this offers some form of financial protection against prem clubs nicking our players for nowt by way of set measures for compensation?

I do not really understand the EPPP. I say bring back the Northern Intermediate League! ;)

Last year my son was in the Rotherham United Elite Development squad which was supposed to be "a step away from the Academy". After a few months of training I had felt that the Elite thing is more of a "money spinner" for the club rather than what it was supposed to be. Other parents felt the same (the subs I paid are higher than in the Junior League) so my son agreed to stop going there and preferred carry on playing in the Junior League because I couldnt really afford to pay for both

The proposed tribunal system is at the bottom of the post for you. It basically means we'll be getting £25,000 a year for players that are signed before they sign a professional contract, which you can't do until they reach their 17th birthday.

Using such as Jacob Mellis as an example, we would have received around £125,000 up front for him instead of the £1m. Then, would have received an extra £35,000 from his loan spells at Southampton (League One) and Barnsley (Championship). You also get 20% of any profit made on his first transfer.

If he would have left Chelsea without making the single appearance, Chelsea would have had to pay us another fee that would be agreed between both clubs, and the club who he joined next (Barnsley in this case) would be paying the appearance fees so we would have received an extra £75,000 so far. So instead of the £1m we have, we would have roughly £235,000.

However, if I understand it right, he wouldn't have been permitted to join Chelsea as he would have been outside the 90 minute travelling "catchment area" to the training facilities. There's obviously an easy way around that though...

The whole system is purely for the benefit of the Premier League in my opinion.
Years spent at academy Fixed fee per year
aged 9–11 £3,000
aged 12–16 £12,500, £25,000 or £40,000 depending on academy category

Appearances Premier League Championship League One League Two
10 £150,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000
20 £150,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000
30 £150,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000
40 £150,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000
50 £150,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000
60 £150,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000
70 £100,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000
80 £100,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000
90 £100,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000
100 £100,000 £25,000 £10,000 £5,000

Cheers for that Daz. Makes sense

Whilst the 90 minute travelling catchment area might work in our favour in terms of fans wanting to see more home grown talent, I suspect KM mightl see it as a bit of a drawback!

This fecker would get you anywhere in England in less than 90 mins ;)

Yes and No...the Academy gets a bit more money puts its way, but we don't get as much money in compensation as we used to.

Correct.

If its any consolation, Silent, I think you've done the right thing. The term Elite is quite 'cute' in the way these so called 'development squads' are marketed. The fact that many incorporate the name of a professional club can also be misleading. They appeal because they promise games and trials, against and with the Academies. They also stress that they allow the lads to remain at their existing local club, whilst being a member of the Squad, a subject that has always been the cause of regret when lads join the Academy.

The cost of subs for junior soccer can be a heavy burden, on average I'd estimate about £150. Many of course have more than one lad playing. There's a real element of paying these centres on the pretence you have a good chance of 'getting noticed'.

Of course, lads can 'graduate' from these development centres to the Academies, but you've got the same chance, if not better remaining at your local junior club.

A lot of the coaches at these centres are not neccessary as good as you've got with your local club.

Wish your lad all the best Silent.

Regards Sharrowblade.

Spot on, SB. Quite a few clubs (especially in the lower divisions) are operating this 'elite' squad system. The only thing elite about it is how much you pay. It is preying on the ambitions and dreams of kids (more the parents in many cases) for a bit of dosh. Morally as bad, if not worse, than sticking 'Wonga' on your shirts if you ask me!

Cheers Sharrow, When I saw the ad about RUFC open trials in the jun league website in March 2012 I asked my lad (u14s at the time) if he would be interested into going to the three sessions (one in March and two in April) and this would be "free" training sessions and then see how it goes after that (if he got invited to the Academy trials then make a go for it but if he was invited to train with the development squad, I advised him not to bother cos he was with Notts Forest development squad in Dronfield when he was u12s, so it would be the same thing). I emailed the club and then I was informed to go to Springs academy for the training sessions. The training was very good and he was placed in the year above (u15s) so we didnt know any of the players that he was training with. I knew a few that were training with the u14s especially a Greenhill player (one of the best players in last season's u14s league) who my lad played in the same u11s team in 2008/09 season. After that first training session the Greenhill player was invited to a 6 week trial at RUFC (i had always thought that he had more talent than some of the Academy players that I knew and I wished him luck- He did get in at RUFC and is still there). After the 3rd training session my lad was invited into the Elite squad which "excited" him. At the time I had not heard of Elite squad and wondered if it was the same as "Development squad" that I wasnt keen on. I asked a workmate (who was a Huddersfield Academy coach at the time) and he explained to me that "Elite squad" is a step away from Academy and how it works and warned me that the subs would be more than it is in the Junior League also I would have to pay for the training kits etc. My lad wanted to go to the training so I agreed that he gets in the elite squad and paid for the training kits etc. A few weeks later I got an email saying that my lad had been invited to a training camp weekend at Keele and the cost would be £375!! I told him that it was too much for a weekend and he accepted. In July he joined Staveley MWFC (u15s for 2012/13) so he "lost interest" in the elite squad so in August he decided not to continue with RUFC elite because it would be to costly for me to pay the subs to the elite and subs to Staveley MWFC. There were other parents who felt the same as I did in thinking that Elite training etc was "too costly" despite that the training was good. Some players carried on and some pulled out

Sharrow, I noticed that your previous avatar had the Greenhill JFC logo, my lad was there in 2008/09 and his team came 3rd in the league. Which age group is your lad in? Also good luck to him!

Cheers Silent, that is a very good article for any parent who find themselves in the same dilemma.

I assume that if your lad is U16s, that Pottsy was probably the manager at Greenhill.

My youngest is in the U9s next season (2013-4), but has now left the club.

Yes, my lad will be in the u16s next season (not at Staveley MWFC though). Pottsy left Brinsworth to join Greenhill in Nov 2008 and his dad was one of the coaches assisting the chairman of the club (the manager who brought my lad into Greenhill unfortunately decided to quit before the start of the 2008-09 season) in running that team before being in complete control a year or two later. Now Pottsy is at RUFC, his dad no longer is running the Greenhill team.

Good Luck to your lad for next season and hope he will play for a good club

Silent. How time flies. I remember you announcing a "new Blade" on a previous forum. Good luck to your son.
