Academy graduates

I thought this was misleading, as it sounds like we’ve been giving academy players a run, when in reality the vast majority of these appearances were made by Sharp and Ramsdale, who were indeed academy players but signed from somewhere else.

Wilder didn’t pick someone direct from the academy in his last 2 and a bit seasons aside from Hackford’s one sub appearance.
Jags?

Not "direct" fron the academy per se, but was definitely an "actual" academy graduate.

I know the point you're making is that none of them were current academy stars, being brought straight out of the academy into the first team, but it's Monday morning and I wanted to be pedantic so there 🤓😂

Yep, Jags as well, though Ramsdale played every game he did last season of course.

Tbh though, it's a bit misleading as between Ndiaye, Sharp, Ramsdale and Jags you're probably covering 110 of em lol

How’s that misleading?

It’s not suggesting it’s been a mix of those listed, just that at least one has played.

It's misleading in the sense that the biggest appearance maker, and two of the others, were signed from other clubs. They were academy players but in this spell did not go into the first team.

If you discount those players it tells a different story. Wilder in particular hardly used academy players in league games after we came out of league one.

I’m still not sure why that matters, or takes anything away from the work the academy do.

The statistic is what it is. If the statistic was in the last 120 games Sheffield United have played an academy player who joined since birth and never played anywhere else, then you might have a point. But it’s not.

Because we pissed away the advantage that the academy gave us by selling these players and having to pay top dollar to get them back.

It makes it sound like the team has more players who are on the academy to first team conveyor belt that there actually are.

Sharp made 2 sub appearances in the league before we sold him the first time. Ramsdale no league appearances at all. And if you want to be really pedantic Jags came from another club's youth system.

I think Sharp has more than paid for himself…. Ramsdale, likewise, given the fees we got which has helped us twice in different circumstances.

Agreed, but that's a different point.

You brought it up.
No I didn’t. You turned the discussion to selling academy players and having to buy them back. Which, as we’ve agreed was an entirely different point to the statistic being discussed.

Something to be really proud of as a club this. When you see the likes of Maguire, Walker, Ramsdale, DCL and probably N’Diaye soon playing at the top levels it shows what we’re doing works!

I guess that’s why Man Utd etc are always trying to pinch our academy staff

If you discount the players from our Academy who play for the club we would have a lower total of our Academy players who have played for the club.

Funny stuff.

I’ve made my point. People can take it or leave it.

What I will accept is Hecky is certainly giving the academy lads opportunities.
