What about great players that under performed / were past it when they played for us?
Could we make up a team?
In their prime what a Blades team would have included....

Ian Rush.
Jimmy Johnston.
Peter Withe.
Stuart Houston.
Martin Peters.

Steve Bruce
Gordon Cowans (though he was still superb)
Paul McGrath
Andy Goram

keeeef for the other wing?

If you can include McGrath (who played superbly in several games) then surely Gary Speed, Stuart McCall are prime candidates as well.

If you're short of a full back then add Stuart Houston (not great in his prime but complete shite for us).

Paul Parker covers one full back slot. He played both left and right back for United. Left Back did not go well.

Edit: Bayingblade beat me to it.

So left back then - how about Quinny second time round...??;)

Has to be Unsworth doesn't it?

You are right Mcgrath should be omitted.
I saw him play some great games for us.

Cowans,
Parker, Phil Thompson, Bruce,
Johnstone, Rioch, Peters,
Withe, Rush.

I feel bad including Macca as he was great for United, but I dont think many could argue he wasnt quite the player he had been. Seemed a logical choice under the category of "great players." I considered Speed briefly but I felt he was way too good for the Blades to be included in this.

He also played what he said was his worst ever game as a professional (Vs QPR). He was shot too, even if he was still a class act.

Then don't include him.

Jimmy Johnstone was one of Britains finest footballers of his generation (most Scots, unless they support Rangers would have him above George Best). He never had even half a decent game for us and so, to me, he epitomises this thread and would be the first name on the team sheet.

If we are talking about great players that underperformed for the Blades you cannot include McGrath, Cowans, McCall in the list as they were better at their time with the Blades than probably all their conterparts playing now!
They oozed quality not a statement that could be made regarding some of the present doyens of the supporters choice like Henderson, Montgomery et al!

They were all well past their best though. Though, admittedly amongst our best players when they did play.

Paul McGrath only made 12 appearances for the Blades, why does it seem like a lot more? He was old, knackered, struggling with alcoholism but still one of the best readers of the game I've ever seen.

Young Latters bought me his autobiography a bit back and what an eye opener. Well worth a read, and he even admits to playing in the top flight whilst completely kettled.....and getting man of the match. Bit of a freak of nature, but like I said, one hell of a footballer.

:gallop:

Adrian Heath

he'll always be remebered for that cross though

who was the everton midfielder we signed years ago? tony grant or something? he played a couple of ok games for us, then his knees went and never came back.

how about don hutchison? he was good before and after us, but i dont remember many good games while with us..
