..for the people that have watched the youth team for a while.
First of all how many, if any of this crop of youth players were there before pembo became youth manager/coach.
second have any of the youth team that were playing before him improved dramatically or is it a case that pembo inherited a decent squad that would have maybe come to this point under any half decent coach?
now before the pembo fan club starts up in defence, i have the upmost respect for john pemberton, hell i even liked him as a player, im just curious as to his crudentials for some people believing he could take over the first team and doing a similar job.

A youth team coach like Pembo is only as good as the squad he inherits. I'm not saying he has done a bad job ( far from it ) but these lads will have been coached by academy staff for years in some cases and these coaches deserve as much credit as pembo

Having watched both final legs on MUTV I think we played generally better in the away leg than the home one.

However a couple of things stood out. I felt we never really threatened them and we seemed incapable of getting many players into their box. Also we seemed good at getting it to the last third of the pitch but thereafter lacked ideas. As MUTV said our goal was the first 'shot on target' all night!

Given the subtelty's or lack of them at Youth level, which was refreshing this was clearly noticeable and very frustrating to watch. We were excellent in the first half in containing Man U, indeed we penned them into their own half for much of the first 45 minutes, but offered buggar all going forward.

Slew was marshalled as if he was a high risk prisoner and many a time there was no one in the box or indeed running into the 'hole' to pick up the ball. I thought MacFadzean showed excellent signs of powering into areas but then found no one to pass the ball too and sadly this is all so typical of United teams when they play at finals and semi-finals as many of us on here can testify.

I thus saw no evidence that on those two performances with a side he has cultivated Pemberton has actually sorted this problem.

I was very proud to see a team representing the club I have supported for over 45 years have a go and it was a fantastic achievement to actually get to the final, but I am now doubting in my lifetime that they will ever bloody well WIN anything!

Spot on! You don't become as good as some of them overnight.

I think we're in danger of going for total football, when what we need is a bit more football. I'm concerned that Pemberton might be too one dimensional in his approach, which many will agree with. I don't think we have the necessary tools (players, cash to buy players) to limit ourselves to a specific style of play.

We need success, however it comes.

That my friend is the question a lot of clubs face. It is the most difficult question in football.....how to score goals.
I have seen, bar Cheltenham, every match in this cup run and United have scored goals galore...and kept scores down defensively.
But you must realise that as they moved up the food chain to the later rounds goalscoring against better funded academy teams obviously becomes more difficult. Despite that they did 3-0 on aggregate against Villa and scored 3 over two legs against Manchester...the best academy of all. The difference was that they conceded 6 on aggregate...an unusual statistic for us. Against almost any other academy in the country the 3 we scored would have kept us in with a great shout of winning the cup.
I don't understand your grumble.

Pemberton is the best thing to happen to this club for many a year and to call Pemberton one dimensional is laughable.
This current team has played some of the best football seen at Bramall Lane for decades. His players have become accomplished and calm with the ball at their feet and you are wishing for something else?
I begin to despair.

When did John Pemberton arrive? Watched the U18s play WBA in March 2010, looked rather unimpressive and lost 0-3.

Speak with any of the Academy coaches and they all tell you the difference Pembo has made with his coaching methods that have to be employed by every Academy team. The U-18s were early benefactors of this but I hope people's expectations are not so high now they expect every u-18 side to be in Cup Finals. The U-15s have been scrapped for next season as they were seen to be extremely poor anothe radical decision made by Pembo.

From my limited knowledge of the youth team, yes the players were at the club but Pembo has instilled belief, organisation and desire into them.

Something the 1st team could certainly do with right now

They were decent players before, but Pemberton certainly has had a big influence on their development in the last year or so.

He's brought more discipline and professionalism into the players which has helped them improve their all round game in my opinion. Technical ability was never the issue with most of them, it was the ability to work as a team and focus on their football properly. Sometimes you can never underestimate the influence of a coach on younger players especially.
