Frustrated Blackwell sees better times ahead for Blades

SHEFFIELD United manager Kevin Blackwell insists that things should improve for the club after the next two games.

The Blades had only 12 senior professionals available for the Carling Cup defeat at Hartlepool United in midweek but their options will be boosted ahead of tomorrow's Championship game against Queens Park Rangers.

Blackwell, who dragged coaches Gary Speed and Paul Crichton out of retirement to sit on the bench against Hartlepool, blames the current financial climate for his player shortage but is also unhappy with international fixtures being played in the first week of the season.

"Sometimes people think you don't know what you are doing – but, if your hands are tied, there is not an awful lot you can do," he said.

"I knew for the first three or four games that we might be short.

"The international break also makes a mockery of things. We have just kicked off the season and I can't put a team out without putting 43-year-olds on the bench. I don't think it is right. I am also having to use kids who have never previously played in a professional game."

Striker Daniel Bogdanovic and reserve team goalkeeper Mihkel Aksalu were the only two Blades players away on international duty (for Malta and Estonia, respectively), while striker Ched Evans had withdrawn from the Welsh squad due to an ankle injury.

Defender Nyron Nosworthy and new signing Stephen Jordan were not deemed fit enough to play while Darius Henderson, Lee Williamson and Ryan France are all long-term injury absentees.

Defender Matt Lowton, meanwhile, was starting a three- game ban after being sent off in the opening game of the season against Cardiff City.

With only 22 senior professionals on the books, Blackwell has already stressed the importance of keeping players fit and avoiding unneccesary suspensions.

Teenagers Jordan Chapell and Kingsley James made full debuts at Hartlepool as Jamie Ward and Stephen Quinn were rested to the bench. Teenager Phil Rowe was also on the bench – yet Blackwell was still able to name only six of the permitted seven substitutes.

"Even with Crichton, Speed, and Rowe, we couldn't fill a bench," said Blackwell. "It just shows that we have not got the strength in depth – but finances dictate. You know what you need to do as a manager but you can't do it.

"We havent got a big enough squad. It's happening everywhere, it's not just us."

Blackwell had expressed his concerns to United chief executive Trevor Birch ahead of Wednesday night's game and been told that defeat would be met with sympathy.

Bogdanovic, Evans and Jordan will all be available for tomorrow's game against QPR and centre-back Nosworthy could also come back into contention. Ward is likely to start after being rested to protect a suspect hamstring.

Reflecting on his side's opening two performances, Blackwell said: "The difference between Sunday and Wednesday was like chalk and cheese. Evenings like Wednesday don't tell me anything – but they might well tell a few fans a few things.

"Players have to do jobs they are not accustomed to until we can sort things out."

The Blades are reporting healthy ticket sales for tomorrow's game which heralds the first return to the club of goalkeeper Paddy Kenny following his controversial decision to link up with former Blades manager Neil Warnock at QPR this summer.

Same old same old, two games in...

Key sentence: The Blades had only 12 senior professionals available.

Not keen on the sympathy statement, but there's not much wrong with the other quotes.

I don't disagree with that. Although, you could definitely argue that the small squad is partly down to Mr Blackwell.

Anyway, my issue is with the sympathy statement. That kind of sentiment and attitude filters down the squad simply through a manager's outward behaviour and it's no surprise that players then put in apathetic performances when little is expected of them.

Quite agree.

I was more aiming the comment at puppet who I suspect has wider complaints to make about it.

This will just re-start the debate that raged yesterday but so what that Speed and Crichton were on the bench, in the old days only 1 sub was allowed then it was 5 now it is 7. he can only use 3 of them anyway. It still doesn't excuse the so reported poor display and lack of passing and shots on goal.
It sounds like the manager is going in with a negative attitude and looking for excuses and this has spread down to the squad. If your manager is negative your staff will be negative. This is the same in any line of business.

I really can't understand all the concern about "filling the bench". Teams can only use 3 subs so having 7 on the bench is a luxury. A goalkeeper, a defender, a midfielder and a striker should be enough for most situations if you have other players in the team who are adaptable.

I wouldn't like to go back to the days of no subs allowed when we occasionally saw players with quite serious injuries hobbling on the wing. One sub was a good move, but then we had two, then three, now 7. Where will it end? Most subs are used for tactical reasons nowadays anyway, rather than injury.

The manager has no where to go this season if he wants to complain about numbers.

Sorry Kev but you can't use the same excuse two years running you are ultimately incharge of first team affairs.

"We havent got a big enough squad. It's happening everywhere, it's not just us."

That's good to know. So it's a level playing field this season meaning that success or failure will come down to his management abilities so there can be no more excuses. If only.

Plenty of other teams in this league manage to assemble healthily sized squads and also get nowhere near 22-25,000 gates like us.

Why can't we put a decent squad together? Excuses excuses as per.

Well said that man !

The major problem with Blackwell (in terms of squad building) is that he is physically incapable of signing footballers who are both good and fit. The odd one maybe like Simmo but the vast majority of signings have done nowt to strengthen the club. His strike rate on both proper and loan signings is a disgrace. His ability to improve players, motivate players is a disgrace and I have no idea how he is in a job at this level. Maybe I have, because he has been operating with vast resources compared with his rivals - this huge advantage he had has now stopped and the results will be clear for all to see.

My thoughts exactly.

I must admit, one of the things that makes me uneasy about KB is the fact that he talks a little too much (in the sense that he tends to shoot his mouth off). He'll say one thing in quite rightly trying to defend himself and his team, but then he'll shoot himself in the foot with a comment that opens him up to criticism.

Sometimes I sit there listening to him and think "no, dont say that!" The comment highlighted by Tuns is an example of what I'm talking about.

I suppose it can be a catch 22 situation.

If he comes out and says it is only us in this situation, there is then talk about why we have no money etc.

I am also wondering how we can have one of the highest wage bills in the league with such a small squad.

I agree Lou, if there is nothing positive to say - say nowt. An alternative approach might have been to fill the bench with more reserve/ academy players (why not?) and tell the lads - go out and show us what you can do. If we lose OK I'm not going to blame you, I'll take it on the chin - Go out and give Hartlepool something to think about and entertain the crowd.

2 matches into the season and this is being spouted again "but, if your hands are tied"
Is he into that sort of stuff???

"The international break also makes a mockery of things.

Bollocks Blackwell, we've not got any international impact players who are called up and not available.

Come to think of it we not any non international impact players.

Who's fault is that then Kevin?????
