I did a bit of facts finding study on our new Manager to see what the deal is with regard to KM and his supposed study of Danny Wilson, having "followed him all his career".
I started with a look at his Division by Division stats instead of Club by Club followed by the Achievements he's gained along with the woes:
Premiership: P 105 W27(25.71%) D18(17.14%) L60 (57.14%)
Championship: P 138 W56(40.58%) D43(31.16%) L38(27.54%)
League 1: P 436 W167(33.30%) D121(27.75%) L148(33.94%)
League 2: P 46 W26(56.52%) D10(21.74%) L10(21.72%)
With that he has 2 promotions (Barnsley(97) and Hartlepool(07))
He has 2 Relegations also (Barnsley(98) and MK Dons(06))
but he has also nearly taken 2 other teams down having been relieved of his duties whether by himself or Sacked (Weds - March 2000 on 17 points and Swindon - Mar 2011 on 31 points)
He walked out on Hartlepool who were on 26 points at Christmas 2008 to Manage Swindon, Hartlepool were also relegated that season.
Having said that, he has won the JPT trophy in 2003 with Bristol City also flirting with the play-offs with Bristol City beaten semi-finalists in 2003 and Beaten Finalists in 2004 (Against Brighton) his other Play-Off appearance was 2010 with Swindon beaten Finalists against Millwall.
His League Cup record, however, is abysmal (P39 W14 D8 L17) and his FA Cup record is P40 W23 D11 L16.
So then I looked at his dealings which may have attributed to any success he actually has gained, along with the woes of course.
Barnsley 1994-1998
94-95: W20 D12 L14 Pts72
In his debut season he didn't spend a penny. He Signed Glynn Hurst and Malcolm Shotton on free's letting Daniel Graham, David Currie, Viv Anderson and Gareth Williams.
95-96: W14 D18 L14 Pts60
This Season Danny signs old pal Peter Shirtliff for £125K along with Arjan de Zeeuw for £250K of note, in total, he signs 5 players for £550K. These funds have been generated by the sale of Gerry Taggart, who was sold for £1.5M
96-97: W22 D13 L10 Pts79
This is his first promotion season, spending just £450K on 7 players like Matty Appleby(£200K) and John Hendrie(£250K) along with Clint Marcelle on a free as well as selling Andy Paynton for £325K.
The Main squad consisted of 6 players he inherited(inh) along with others costing £700K.
David Watson (50)(inh)
Arjen De Zeeuw(49(2)), Nicky Eaden(52(3))(inh).
Matty Appleby(41(0)), Neil Redfearn(49(19))(inh), Darren Sheridan(45(2))(inh), Martin Bullock(32(1))(inh).
John Hendrie(38(16)), Clint Marcelle(46(9)), Andy Liddle(43(8))(inh), Paul Wilinson(51(11)).
3 of this squad came from their Academy.
97-98: W10 D6 L24 Pts36
The Premiership season saw some embarrassing results come their way with a few 7+-0 results. Besides spending £5.7M on 8 players including £1.5M on Gjorgi Hristov and £1.3M on Ashley Ward before strengthening with Jan Aage Fjortoft in January for £800K. Barnsley are eventually relegated but kept the core of the squad together continually playing 3 players that came through the ranks. After Relegation Barnsley are forced to sell top earners Neil Redfearn and Paul Wilkinson sparking ambition from the Manager after Sheff Weds make an offer for his Services.
His overall spend was £6.65M for 21 players as 21 also went out for a combined fee of £3.12M
Sheff Wed 98-00
98-99: W13 D7 L18
Wilsons appointment at Sheff Wed sparked interest in the core support with his ability to splash the cash £4.6M on 6 players including Wim Jonk for £2.5M and Richard Cresswell for £950K. The Owls were in trouble most the season especially after losing Di Canio to West ham early in the season for £1.75M and influential player Magilton for £685,500. Benito Carbone(9) and Petter Rudi(7) finishing the season as top scorers.
99-00: W4 D5 L18
Another summer of spending for Wilson saw expectation rocket the signing of Gerald Sibon and Gilles De Bilde for a combined £5M. The sale of Emerson Thome for £2.7M and Benito Carbone for a small fee to Villa hindered rather than helped the Owls plight throughout the season eventually costing Wilson his job in March when the S6 club was on just 17 points. Steve Haslam was a plus point however as Danny gives the youngster his first pro contract and first team starts in the Premiership.
A spending spree of £9.6M with a sales return of just £5.2125M eventually sealed his fate.
Bristol City 00-04
00-01: W18 D13 L15 Pts67
Danny Wilson took over the Robins on 27th June and quickly went about evaluating his squad.
He began his signings with proven goal scorer Lee peacock for £600K as well as freeby, Mark Lever. Wilson used the existing squad members, including 5 Academy players brought through from the last regime, for the entire season with the goalscoring prowess of Lee peacock finishing the season on 15 goals from 40 Appearances second only to £1M Tony Thorpe who finished on 23 goals from 46 Appearances.
01-02: W21 D10 L15 Pts73
A largely successful season for Wilson reaching the Semi Finals of the Johnston Paint Trophy.
Danny Wilson under a strict no spend rules gains success with 8 Academy prospects, 2 making their first team debuts (Daniel Coles and Kevin Amankwaah). Tony Thorpe again finishing as Top Goal scorer on 19 Goals from 49 Appearances.
His spending tally after 2 seasons was £700K for 6 players taking in just £30K for the 9 moved on from the club.
02-03: W25 D10 L11 Pts85
Another step forward for the club as Wilson continues his growing of the club. Signing just 1 player, influential defender Tony Butler along with 2 more Academy prospects gaining their Professional contracts (Liam Rosenior and Leroy Lita). Wilson also moves on 7 players to balance the wages books.
Wilsons squad now consisted of 8 home grown players as the main squad; Aaron Brown, Louis Carey, Daniel Coles, Matt Hill, Liam Rosenior, Joe Burnell, Tom Doherty and Leroy Lita.
Wilson’s success includes winning the Johnston Paints Trophy and also being beaten in the Play-off semi-finals.
03-04: W22 D14 L10 Pts80
In a desperate attempt to secure promotion to the Championship, the Robins board decide to allow Wilson to spend a little money but he had to raise the cash himself. The sale of academy prospect Liam Rosenior for a pittance (£55K) and the previous seasons Top Scorer, again for a pittance, Scott Murray is sold for £650K after scoring 27 from 57 appearances.
This allows the purchase of Lee Miller(£300K) and Luke Wiltshire(£250K) who both accumulate over 45 appearances in the season.
Wilson continued to feature all 7 Academy players he gave chances to along with his “Big” signings Miller, Wiltshire and Peacock, the latter finishing top scorer on 16.
His success was a 1-0 Play-Off final defeat to Brighton, which ultimately cost him his job (for some reason, I’m unsure of).
MK Dons04-06
04-05: W9 D10 L8 Pts37
Danny was installed as boss on 7th December securing safety after a disappointing season. His wheeling an0d dealing in the transfer market identified he needed to shore up a leaky defence and he secured the free signings of keeper Matt Baker, defenders Paul Mitchell and Michel Pensee-Bilong and striker Clive Platt. He also again raids the Academy, handing our professional contracts to Leon Crooks, Jason Puncheon and Wade Small. All 7 players making up the vast majority of his squad for the rest of the season. Allan Smart a stalwart player for the MK Dons is swiftly moved on after a bust up with Wilson.
05-06: W11 D14 L21 Pts47
Wilson’s, ill fated, last season at MK Dons saw the side relegated to league 2 despite signing 3 players for £100K and the loan signings of Trent McClenanan and Stephen Quinn. Izale McLeod again matched his season haul of 18 goals from 45+ league appearances. The sale of young Wade Small replacing him with Aaron Wilbraham is seen as the most likely cause as the goals dried up.
7 players in for £100K and a return of £0 from the moving on of 4 players along with relegation ultimately sealed his fate.
Hartlepool06-08
06-07: W26 D10 L10 Pts88
A first season in League 2 proves to be successful as Wilson steers Hartlepool to automatic promotion. He begins the season with 5 new signings joint top scorer Richard Barker joins for £80K as well as free signings Willie Boland, Andy Monkhouse and Ali Gibbs. Wilson also sees potential in young Gary Liddle, awarding him with his first professional contract.
All 5 signings make up the majority of his first team along with 3 other academy products Antony Sweeney, Matty Robson and James Brown.
07-08: W15 D9 L22 Pts54
A first season back in League 1 proves difficult as Hartlepool manage to steer clear of relegation, Just! A young Hartlepool side again Danny Wilson using another academy prospect Michael Mackay, the majority of his side consisted of 6 home grown players and 7 signings costing approximately £80K.
Only experienced players in Ritchie Humphreys, Michael Nelson and Ben Clark remained of the team Wilson inherited. Richie Barker again topping the scorers charts on 16 from 43 League Appearances. The free signing of Ian Thomas-Moore only to be sold in January, proved to be the breaking point of the season as the youngster had scored 11 goals from 30 appearances.
08- Dec 08: W7 D5 L8 Pts26
26 points from 20 games by the 14th December quickly saw Wilson out of the door. Injury to veteran Barker meant Hartlepool was struggling for goals and form dropped. Wilson had signed Sam Collins and Ritchie Jones on free-bees to bolster his squad, but the gamble didn’t work.
Wilson was relieved of his duties and Hartlepool was eventually relegated, Barker was released at the end of the campaign.
Wilson, to his credit, used 6 Academy players, spent £80K on 10 players he brought in and made the club a cool £1M from the sales of Adam Boyd, Ian Thomas-Moore and Jon Daly.
10 players in, 18 out altogether.
Swindon09-11
Dec 08-09: W8 D9 L9 Pts33
Wilson was appointed manager of Swindon around Boxing Day with the sole task of saving their season. A squad armed with Billy Paynter and JP McGovern, Wilson swiftly put On Loan Simon Cox under contract for £200K and signed Gordon Greer to shore up his defence.
Wilson changed the playing style and was duely rewarded by propelling his Swindon up the league.
09-10: W22 D16 L8
Wilson recognised that whole sale changes needed to be made and when the offer of £1.5M came in from West Brom for Simon Cox, he saw this as the ideal time to go ahead with his plans.
Out went 6 players including Aljofree, Pook and McNamee, in came David Lucas, Jonathan Douglas, Scott Cuthbert and David Prutton as well as Academy Signing Lescinal Jean-Francois and Charlie Austin (This is unconfirmed as he seems to have come out of nowhere).
A successful season by large followed with Swindon being narrowly beaten by Millwall in the Play-Off Final. Another 1-0 loss in the final for Wilson.
The Partnership of Billy Paynter(29) and Charlie Austin(20) scooped 49 Goals for the season.
10-11: W7 D10 L16
The board quickly went about cutting costs after the Wembley defeat, Selling Billy Paynter to Leeds, Gordon Greer to Brighton and Sean Morrison for £500K.
Wilson was forced into the free market and signed 8 players including Matt Ritchie, Michael Rose and Paul Caddis.
The sale of Charlie Austin for a cut price £500K was the breaking point, Goals dried up and an awful haul of 3 points from 33 saw Wilson relieved of his duties on 2nd March.
Make of this what you want but his ability to see decent talent coming through the ranks is very good. His ability to wheel and deal is also very good. The only problem I have with this appointment now is Wilson’s lack of Promotions with such promising players.
I can also now see why KM chose this Manager.
I’ll be there next season.
