I'm sure that's the lowest crowd I've seen at the Lane for a competitive game. Has there ever been a lower crowd?

I'll have a look later, but it depends on what you mean by 'competitive game'. Anglo-Italian? County Cup? Zenith Data? Surely as big as the pathetic Checkatrade Paint Pot Tin Pot Cup.

Could hear everything the players were shouting to each other. I heard Simon Moore shout and I was sat at the opposite end!

I think 8:40pm is a new record for me. That's the latest its ever been until I remembered we were playing. I still didnt check the score until 9:10pm, and I was happy with what I saw, especially as it means we cant go through to the next stage.

I really hope two U23 teams make it to the final and no one turns up. The only downside is that the FA would say that proves how strong these reserve teams are, where in fact all it shows is that the league clubs don't give two shiny shites.

My record is 15:14 v Southend at the Lane in 1988. I was sat in the 'H' block and just knew it was going to be crap. So I left and went to the nearest pub.

Really? You left that game early?

I'm surprised because at that point our record in home league games was W8 D0 L0, and W11 D1 L0 overall (we'd drawn against Chester in the Sherpa Van thingy the same week).

Mind you, it was crap, and we lost, so you were right.

Not only that, Rev. I've seen most things at footie but the animals who rolled in late in the H Block (back then, can't speak for now) hardly makes for pleasant viewing. My seat had two empty on my right and one empty on my left. When these three morons rolled in about five minutes after kick-off (worst for wear, probably drink and drugs) one of them said 'Move up, mate.' I was in one of 'those' moods, so I said 'Fuck off. You should have come earlier.' There was plenty of space around, but I just wanted to make a point. The steward nearby was looking to see if anything would develop. It didn't, but the cunt who took the empty seat to my left spent the ten minutes or so that I was at the match with his head bent over, dribbling endless streams of gob onto the floor.

Blade or not, these cunts are a waste of space.

Oh, and regards how 'well' we were doing when I left the game, a few seasons ago - in the Third Division - we played Swansea at home. The visitors were so shite, I asked the bloke behind me where they were in the League. Turns out they were up near the top. I was, and remain, fucking amazed.

There have been a couple of occasions where I've gone out to watch the Blades and ended up staying in the pub. This includes an away game in Leeds in the 1980's, when by 3pm we were literally too drunk to walk to the ground.

Any blades thread that includes the words.. all time low .... throws up a number of possible contenders.....all of which I am still undergoing counselling to erase!!!

I went to that. It was shite. Pretty certain we lost 1 - 0 and Marian Pahars scored it who was the only Latvian I had heard of.

There was a reason we played it but I can't for the life of me remember.

Their manager Gary Johnson was mates with Warnock and it was around the same time as United were getting into their "Establishing foreign links which ultimately lead to fuck all" phase. So it was probably something to do with that.

Funnily enough, that game was Phil Jagielkas debut so I guess it was pretty notable after all.

I still occasionally joke about the time I saw us play a national side.

By the end of this week I doubt I'll ever mention the Walsall game again.

The game you saw David Brooks make his first start?

Never even knew Darwen had a team. Oh well, survival of the fittest I suppose.....
Darwen FC have an interesting history, being naturally selected to inhabit the lower leagues in 1900. Many thought they had become extinct in 2009 but had actually evolved into AFC Darwin and survive today in a remote region of Lancashire.
