Thanks to his hat trick yesterday, Beattie is now only a single goal away from bagging 20 goals this season.

As far as I can remember, the last player to top 20 goals in a single season was Michael Brown in 2002/03... but with two cup runs and the playoffs to extend the season.

Who was the last striker to score 20 in a season and how many have achieved it in recent times?

Id have said the last one was probably Brian Deane?
def none under Warnock. He liked to rotate his strikers to much:confused:

Andy Gray nearly managed it in 2004/05 with 18 goals and Jack Lester got 15 in 2003/04.

Marcelo got 20 in the league and cup in 1998/99... other than that, the goalscoring tables for the past 10 years are a true example of mediocrity :)

I remember a few years back when Shaun Murphy came within a few goals of being our top scorer.

Think he was outdone in the end by David Kelly....

Aye yer reight..........and Brownie cost £400,000 and BT cost £4million

The price of ambition for you my dear fellow :)

What does strike me season is the lack of players who are anywhere near Beattie's total... while Beattie also tops the assists league according to the OS (which is about as reliable as a chocolate lamp shade at the best of times).

I for one am thankful for Beattie's goals, because looking at the rest of 'em, bloody hell knows where we'd be without them.

The difference is... at the time.... Browny was a reject and a misfit.

People would have claimed it was a crap signing lacking ambition, been on his back straight away. He took time to bed in and only really properly clicked for a season and a half.

James Beattie is an ex-international (ok not regular) who has a history of goalscoring, is rated highly in a number of circles and who was tempted from a current top half established Premiership team.

He's also banged in 19 goals so far, despite playing in a failing team, being injured and having to cope with "f10pp0 and Terry"....

How much would you realistically expect a 20 goal a season striker to cost?

Strikers cost more than Midfielders as a rule.
Brown scored goals like Ronaldo has been doing this season for Manure, no one expected him to score as many as he did. He was in the team to create and got the bonus of scoring lots of goals.
Beattie is proving that he is a nautral goalscorer and is doing what he's paid to do.
