I know a few people were upset by some of the assessments of our team by the media before a ball was kicked, not least Wilder, who claimed we'd been "ridiculed" by some. We were the bookie's firm favourites to be relegated too.
While predictions that we were going to down with record low points were a little harsh, I think it was hard to argue with the idea that we'd struggle, especially when you take into context what we have, compared to what we're up against.
It's clear that yesterday's team is our current best 11. While they currently look a force to be reckoned with, it's easy to forget their humble beginnings. Before Wilder got hold of them, 1 player was playing in League 2, 6 were playing in League 1, 3 were from the Championship and 1 from the Premier League.
In terms of the entire squad, it was valued at a modest £82m, the lowest in the PL, and a mere 7% of the value of Manchester City's squad, the league's most valuable.
Yet with all that said, football is 11 v 11 at the end of the day. I know it's a tired cliché, but we're living proof: the numbers, the predictions, the backgrounds of the players, the odds - none of it matters. If you have a well rehearsed tactical system, talent, and players who work as hard as they can, none of the above matters.
So here's to Chris Wilder and the lads. Defying the odds, restoring pride in our club and consistently being better and wanting it more than opposition, regardless of who it is.
