Born in Bootle, Jose Baxter began his career with his home town club, Everton.

At one stage rated by the Toffee's academy as "a better prospect than Wayne Rooney", Baxter broke into their first team as the youngest ever to do so, at the age of 16 years and 191 days.
<br /><br />
After a loan spell with Tranmere Rovers, Baxter was offered a new two-year contract by then Everton boss David Moyes. Frustrated at his lack of continued first team opportunities, he turned down the offer and opted to try and find first team football elsewhere.

After a couple of months, Jose was offered a short-term contract at Oldham Athletic where he spent just over a year, scoring 15 league goals in 37 starts and making himself popular with the Latics faithful.

Baxter started the 2013/2014 season as an Oldham regular with a brace in an opening day victory against Stevenage attracting renewed interest from a number of clubs interested in acquiring his services.
<br /><br />
Towards the end of August , David Weir (having previously worked with Jose at Everton) pounced and signed Baxter from the Latics for an undisclosed fee. Baxter signed a three-year deal with United, going straight into the first team squad for the home loss against MK Dons.
