Quick message to George Long

Can somebody point out what he did for him to 'have done well' ?

I mentioned the decent punch second half through a crowded penalty area, a decent claim at the feet of a Southend player, and some ok distribution. Think there was a solid claim from a corner 2nd half too. His volleyball pass to outside the penalty area for the 1st goal wasn't ideal but hardly a howling error of Simmo proportions. And certainly less of an error than some of Howard's misjudging of shots this season. I'd give him a 6.5/10 performance overall.

How about we back a young keeper rather than get the daggers out for him every game he plays?

I don't blame him at all for the first goal today, he dealt with the immediate danger and got the ball clear of the penalty area. It was the lack of urgency from the rest of the players to close down a player who'd been left in far too much room on the edge of the box which led to the goal.

He was OK but very rarely does he catch a cross.

I just worry every time he is near the ball, is he going to catch it, punch it or completely miss it.

Pack it in son , football is clearly not your thing.

Adkins said for the first that it was a good punch from George falling backwards, you know, the one that he could and should have caught. Plays, gets dropped, comes back, no improvement, still looks like a rabbit caught in the headlights. Swap one poor keeper for another, great.

At Lane end today, that wasn't a flap from Long he punched it (I think all keepers should catch it when they can, which was the case today, but that's another argument). The Southend player on the edge of the box was unmarked, if they were properly drilled that wouldn't be happening. They know Long punches rather than catches so that should have been closed down. For me poor defending rather than the keepers fault for the first goal.

The defence was more at fault for their first goal than Long.

Stood and watched as the ball fell to his feet, gave him ample time to take his time and pick his spot.

Yeah it was crap defending Pete but the point is Long should have caught the bleeding thing.

People don't like Long and they're trying to find faults with his performance when there were none.

He was more commanding than Howard tends to be.

Neither are commanding Danny and you are joking if you think there was no faults in his performance.

he flapped a couple of time early on I thought, and there was a very weak punch in particular I recall, but he seemed to grow into the game second half and looked to be getting his confidence back, thought he did OK.

I may have been drinking the Kool-Aid but I believe Long has potential and will improve greatly if given a run of games in the first team.
Play him until the end of the season and he could be the best goalkeeper in this division for our promotion push next season.

George did a great punch in the second half when he could only get one hand to the ball, but I hate to see two handed punches like to one for the first goal. If you can get two hands on the ball then catch it!!!

Pat Jennings would have caught the one handed punch.

Was the Southend player in the zone?

Adkins has just said it was a "Great punch" and that Long had a "good game and was commanding"

What, really? That's worrying. I think he's losing it. That was a bad punch. You punch away from danger. Goalkeeping 101. Actually, if you're going to punch with two fists (what's that about??!!), you should be catching it.

From which division though League one or two ?

If anything, Long got too much on the punch - any less and it would've dropped to one of the many defenders marking fresh air!

And did anyone see Neuer trying to punch vs Arsenal or Hart trying to catch (a much easier ball) against Norwich?! It's not as easy as some seem to think.

A lot have said that Long stays on his line too much, and one time he doesn't and does an 'ok' job, he gets vilified

Quick message to O. Poster - have you considered retracting your OP? Mind you there are 6 "likes" on it.

I despair.

P.S. Sorry if I'm repeating anything, no time to read the full thread.
