Think that's a bit harsh Alfreton, he sounds pretty pissed off about it to me!

Fair play, we all see/hear things slightly differently. Just wish there'd been a bit more anger there. Not chucking stuff about, just a bit more edge.

I mean: he's put his trust big-time in certain players who've let him (& us) down very badly today.

Appreciate he's not going to pick out individuals (as his predecessor might have done), but it was all a bit bland & general for my liking.

There again, what matters is what he does now, not what he says!

He acknowledged we weren't good enough. He wouldn't highlight individual players. Didn't blame the fans. Said there was work to do. Said he was hoping to have someone in and will continue to work at it. He didn't throw about positive lift-me-ups. Not sure what we could have expected after that disaster.

Said he'd give every one a clean sheet and he has, and today I think he put all the problems in one basket for the board to see.
So now they know there going to have to put their hand in their pocket if they want us to go up....

Nigel,i am "well aware" that we are not "moving forward".

The only thing that has changed is the managers surname,we are still the same, the same owd that cant score and cant defend.

Right, I'm calming down a little.
- I've been fuming for a while now that McEveley has been made captain.
-I'm disappointed that no center half half been drafted in yet.
-I'm seriously underwhelmed by Woolford already.
-and I was really frustrated when Long got a start today.
All that said. Nigel has only had training and preseason games to go on. He likes McEveley because he trains hard and talks a lot. I'm sure Long is a unbelievable shot stopper up at Attercliffe,so as upset as I am that the "clean slate" has canceled out some obvious flaws from last season he has to be given a chance to learn from his/and the players mistakes in real league games too.
People will shoot me down because I'm just a fan, but Nigel got it wrong today. He might have also got the recruitment wrong(or at least his priorities) up to this point too but if he rectifies those mistakes QUICK then I think that's all we can ask.
Nobody is as embarrassed as I am tonight, I'm avoiding my local as we speak because I can't deal with the blue and white bastards tonight but I've still got a lot of belief in Adkins.

Agree with most of that.

The most frustrating aspect is that he's stated several times that he's watched DVDs of the games from last year so he should know the issues with all the players. Yet he goes ahead and makes McEverley captain. Bewildering.

Charlton , Spurs , West Ham , Southampton , unfortunatley the DVD set of the cup runs , in the club shop .

UTB

I think he watched the Lost dvd

Wow. Exactly how most of us saw it. woohoo.
And yet there are no calls for his head....

Didnt Nigel Clough also say what everyone else so and was highly critisised...

Seems like we had no plan... no fight and no defence... of only we had been saying since last october we needed a defender or 2.......

Nah

When someone suggested we sign big Jon Parkin & the response was "I'd rather have an industrial sized barrel of swarfega upfront!"

That was funnier!
;)

Today we did have an industrial sized barrel of swarfega up front. He's on loan from Derby.

It's worse than most folk are saying.
We've just had a whole pre season to sort out the defence. That time has been completely wasted. Just as it was last season. We are so far off the pace it's unbelievable. The first match of the season should at least be a competitive match win or lose.
It will take weeks to rebuild confidence. It will take weeks to rebuild the defence.
If no new defenders are signed then this season will be inconsistent crap.

You might just have hit the nail on the head. If it was planned then it's a master stroke.

I think it was quite shocking how wrong NA got it yesterday. The last two seasons Gillingham have been a strong direct team who like to out muscle teams and play for set prices.

With this in mind many of us were surprised with the team selection especially the non selection of James Wallace, Howard and either Sammon or Higdon.

Yesterday was a day to match them in the physical game and scrap for a win. Instead we witnessed more than half the team lack the drive, bottle and desire to wear the shirt.

I think the abuse the fans gave the players at half time and full time would have been worse had most of the fans not been in shock

Thank god I can't go to Morecombe

There's not really much more that you can say. I don't think NA could have said much else after that and he's wise not to pick out individuals.

If he had watched the DVDs from the cup runs, he would have seen how the team are capable of playing so should be asking them, "why can't you play like that every week lads?". I've said it before that this set of players are more than comfortable playing teams that play football so we did well against Hull and Newcastle. What our team don't like is the likes of Gillingham, MK Dons and Peterboro bullying us, whacking us and throwing high balls into the box. This is precisely what NA needs to work on, we need to be mentally and physically strong to get promoted out of this league, not just be able to string a few passes together and look pretty.

Far too early to panic, it's not a catastrophe, but we need to bounce back next week v Chessy.

Because if we played like that every week and went up then most of them would be shown the door.

Listening to his pre-match interview, he seemed to take pride in the fact that he and his coaching team had picked up on the fact Gillingham had tried to keep it quiet that they had someone with a long throw, and had prepared accordingly. He'll have no doubt been a bit miffed that precisely the thing he highlighted led to the opener.

I was as optimistic as any heading to Gillingham. The only shred of doubt, which I mentioned last week, was that the downside of an "unbeaten preseason" was that you learn a lot about your players from seeing defeats – seeing how they respond to set-backs.

I suspect he will have learnt more about the team yesterday (how individual players responded to his preparation, how they responded mid game) than all of the preseason games put together.

Because if we played like that every week and went up then most of them would be shown the door.

Interesting, are you suggesting our players are playing crap on purpose because they think that if we get promoted then they'd be shipped out?

Either that or they just can't be bothered motivating themselves for the 'lesser' games. I wouldn't be surprised if some of them who have been here a while are content with staying where they are and picking up a wage.

The acid test will be next Saturday ! Same fare again and there are going to be some very unhappy people - probably 10 times the number that attended Gillingham !
Unfortunately, Mr Adkins the positivity you have enjoyed the last few weeks will disappear as the fans in general are totally fed up with watching Division Three football !
