Can't say I'm that surprised. A bold decision. No point dwelling on it, it is what it is.

However (!!!), we are where we are because of constant chopping and changing. We desperately need a period of stability with the right man at the helm for the long term. I'd prefer the board to take their time and make sure they get this one right (with a long term realistic plan!).

There was a case for giving him another few months but that would have meant giving him another chunk of money to spend. On balance I favoured that route but I entirely understand this decision. If only the squad had shown any semblance of unity and understanding of playing whatever system Clough had in mind; if only his signings had been any good; if only he had signed proper players in key positions; he would have had more time; but he they didn't and he didn't.

Thing is Clough spent much bigger than he forecast last summer and still failed. Not only failed but failed in a shambles. Preston put the play-off performance in context yesterday.

It's a shame, but the phrase "taken us as far as he can" is very correct here.

Clough is a fantastic coach with a good understanding of the game, but his attitude ruins all of that when it comes to management and also proved last season to being shockingly bad with a budget at his disposal. That said, thanks for coming in and doing the work you did Nige.
