Alcohol back in the Stands

Fair enough - I see France ban it as well. Don’t think it invalidates the point though.

Germany, Italy, Netherlands and most of ‘beer drinking’ Europe allow it.

Dont know what others perception of it was at the Bochum game but it didn’t cause any real issue that I could see.

I think the whole “beer throwing” thing is more a performative thing people do for televised England matches.

That Boxpark and other places like it are set up purposefully for people to go and throw beer with likeminded individuals. Its always struck me as a thing armchair fans do, rather than those who go week in, week out.

Never seen anyone do it at a non league ground. Likewise plenty of people are already drinking pop or water in the stands anyway. Never been drenched in Fanta after a goal.

At £7 a pint are people really going to throw beer they’ve queued 20 mins for. Especially when they know there’s a fair chance you’ll get a slap for it.
 
I'm in favour if you can bring your own tinnies in. I can't imagine how little beer I'd have left if I had to carry 3 plastic pint glasses back from the bar to my seat 3/4 down the kop.
 
Can you imagine trying to navigate your way back to your seat on a freezing cold December night with a pint in each hand?
Up & down the steps trying to get down the aisle to your seat ....spilling it all over people as you go ....
Then sitting in yer seat freezing yer nuts off wet cold hands drinking a pint ...
Id Just wait till after game & have a decent beer in a nice warm pub .....
Its pointless argument I think ...have one at half time if you really need to .
 
Im in favour. If opening times stay as they are, the only difference it makes is saving downing shit beer right before the game/half kicks off and frees up a bit of space on the typically crowded concourse - all good.

It’s a bit like the argument against safe standing, people who largely object seem to think because they don’t others shouldn’t have opportunity to do so.

Weird. Atmospheres are so sterile, but you can see why.

If they're willing to pay £6 for a pint of piss, and then have the desire to throw it (like some away fans do on concourses), doubt they'd be bothered about that.

Burnham says it's about discrimination, but it's about commons sense really. You don't get the same level of knobhead behaviour at other sports. Think this could put a fair few off going.

I just dont understand where this move is being driven from , not so sure its supporters groups , or clubs , or police , or pretty much anyone except Burnham himself .

Draw your own conclusions to that.
 
I’m in favour, plastic bottled beer will probably work better for spillage purposes. People aren’t stupid, and will know if they keep getting up and down it’ll frustrate the people around them. It’d be nice to go down to Q 5 mins before each half starts and take a bottle up for first 20. Go to loo at HT and FT.
 



I think it's a good idea, having been born in 1958, I can remember the good times(or maybe not) with alcohol in grounds...BUT we've all grown up and become responsible now 🤪

People manage it in Germany, France, Holland, Denmark the USA etc etc. Are we Brits exceptionally clumsy or something?

It's bad enough the weak bladder brigade up and down, then they will be kicking your pint over so I'm generally in the no camp. However, I'm guessing the beer glass snake ritual will relieve hours of boredom, just like these Norwich fans ;)
 
Looking outside the lane perhaps it would be good for lower league teams and help generate some additional income? Someone mentioned non-league teams selling alcohol for consumption in the stands without the world coming to an end!

The suggestion is ending the ban, I'm sure how individual clubs implement that will differ.
 
I don’t have an issue with it. Happens in every other country I can think of, without major issue. As well as many other sports in the UK. If you don’t want one, don’t buy one - nobody is forcing you to buy ones

Its all about opinions mate ..Last thing id wanna do is sit holding a pint of beer on a feezing day in nov Dec Jan....
 
Even though the government may allow it, will each club decide individually whether they want to allow it anyway? Then again it's probably a silly question in the end because it will obviously generate more sales so they aren't not going to allow this are they!
 
Considering what you see from groups of England fans watching the game at a big screen, the likelihood of fans just launching beer around if/when a goal is scored seems nigh on guaranteed to me.

When you think of how daunting a single match day is in terms of cost nowadays, having the risk of needing to take my entire outfit for the day to a dry cleaner afterwards, all because a percentage of people are incapable of behaving themselves, would make me not want to go at all.

Putting arguments aside on cost/quality virtually every other type of spectator entertainment leaves it to the venue/organiser to make the call on selling alcohol - which the vast majority do.

You can drink in the stands at non league football, women’s football and at every other pro football league in Europe.

Leave it up to the individual to decide where and when they want a drink. If somebody is determined to get drunk they will simply do it before the match, regardless of whether you can get a drink in the ground.

In fact, on away games especially, it’s usually the case people will get tanked up because they know there will be a 90 minute window where they can’t get a drink.

In terms of people getting up and down to go to the bar - it closes at kick off and doesn’t reopen til 38 minutes. No real need to change that.

With family and other commitments I don’t always have the time for the pub before or after so it would be nice to get a drink during the game. Maybe even get one at half time I don’t have to try and drink in 5 minutes.

I'm in favour as long as the bars don't keep serving during the game. No problem people taking their drink in and then finish it off during the half, it works fine at theatres.
Allowing people to keep getting up and going for another is a definite no no.
